Our Week - The One with Labor Day Playdates, a Lunch Date, and Jacob’s First Golf Match

We had a fairly lowkey week and weekend, and it was a nice change of pace from the previous week when we were busy busy!

Monday, September 5

Monday was Labor Day, so the kids were out of school and B was off of work.  Since we were all coming off of a very busy weekend – a high school football game Friday night, a Georgia game in Atlanta on Saturday, and family lunch and dinner on Sunday – I wanted nothing more than to relax.  Naturally, our kiddos had other plans, though.  Haha.

Monday morning, we got up and had breakfast, and then we had just enough time to watch one episode of Nailed It before it was time to get Olivia to a play date at her friend, Cami’s, house.  I dropped her off late in the morning and then headed straight back home because Jacob’s friend, Jack, was being dropped off at our house to hang out shortly after that.

After Jack was dropped off, B headed to Walmart to pick up a few things we needed urgently, and then we made lunch for the two of us + Jacob and Jack.  After that, Jacob and Jack played video games, they played hide n seek around the house (random – haha) and they tinkered with Jacob’s Legos.

While they hung out, I got a blog post finished in my office, and then mid-afternoon after Jack’s mom picked him up, Jacob and I headed over to Cami’s house to pick up Olivia.  Naturally, she didn’t want to leave, and she proclaimed that her play date at Cami’s house was, “better than going to Disney World.”  Say whaaaat?!  Haha.

When we got home, the kiddos played video games for a bit as it rained off and on all day which meant there weren’t very many opportunities for outdoor time.  I spent the afternoon making the meal plan for the upcoming week as well as making a grocery list, and I also got everything prepped and ready for the week ahead.

We had some leftover Taco Joes for dinner, and then after that, I got out for an-almost 3-mile walk/jog since the weather had mostly cleared.

When I got back, the kids put on a short Halloween parade for Brian and me, and then we got caught up on AGT.  After that, the kiddos headed off to bed, and B and I ended our evening with an episode of Vampire Diaries + some more college football.

Tuesday, September 6

Tuesday morning, I dropped the kids at school and then I headed to Publix to get our grocery shopping done for the next two weeks.  The rest of the day was spent working and getting caught up on life stuff, and then I grabbed the kids from school when they got out.

We headed home for snacks and homework, and then Jacob and I dropped Olivia at dance.  While she was there, he and I ran some errands – Hobby Lobby, Party City, Bath & Body Works, and Staples – and then we headed home to start dinner.

Since Olivia gets out of dance so late on Tuesdays, B picked her up so I could have dinner on the table by the time they got home.  After dinner, the kiddos wanted to play wiffle ball in the back yard, and even though it was past time for them to start taking showers and getting ready for bed, we obliged.  We’re going to be losing daylight in the evening soon, so I figured we might as well let them get outside as much as possible now before that happens.

Both kids did several rounds of hitting, and then they went in to get ready for bed while I went for another walk/jog.  When I got back home, I showered, and then we started watching America’s Got Talent before giving it up a little before 9 so we could get the kids in the bed.  After the kids went to bed, B and I watched, you guessed it, another episode of Vampire Diaries.  What else did you think I was going to say?  Hahahaha.

Wednesday, September 7

Wednesday, I dropped the kids at school and then I headed home to work.  I met my old coworker/friend, Greg, for lunch at our favorite pizza place, and we caught up for the next hour.  He still works for the same company where I worked in sales and marketing for 13 years, and he keeps me up-to-date on all the things!

After we were done with lunch, I headed back home for a few minutes to tackle a couple of projects, and I finally got Olivia’s bow holder put back together.  It recently fell off of her closet door, and when it did, the ribbons that hold the bows detached from the frame, but I was able to get the whole thing repaired.

By the time that was done, it was time to pick up the kids from school.  We had nowhere to be Wednesday, so we had a slow evening at home.  While the kids did homework, I finished reading my book, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and y’all, it was fantastic.

Once homework was done, the kids played for a bit, and then when B got home from work, he and Jacob headed to the driving range while Olivia and I hung back and made dinner.  My happy helper did all of my chopping and she kept me company while I got everything else prepped and ready.

By the time the boys got home, dinner was ready, so we all sat down to eat together and then we all went out back and played wiffle ball again per Jacob’s request.  I asked him if he’s missing baseball, and his reply was, “Yeah, a little.”

While the kids showered and got ready for bed, I got out for a 2-mile run, and then when I got home, I squeezed in a quick arms workout.  We all watched some more of AGT and then sent the kids to bed, and then B and I watched an episode of Vampire Diaries before calling it a night.  And if you’re one of those who was worried about Vampire Diaries leaving Netflix, in case you didn’t know by now, it moved to HBO Max the very next day after it left Netflix so there was no interruption in viewing for us since we already have HBO Max!  Yay!

Thursday, September 8

Thursday morning, I dropped the kiddos at school and then I headed home to get a bunch of stuff done.  On deck for Thursday was some blog work, some photography work, the start of my recipe organization, and a few other random odds and ends.

B came home at lunchtime to work from home for the rest of the day because he had to get Jacob to his first golf match at 4.  We ate lunch together and then I got right back to work.

After I picked up the kids from school, we had just enough time to grab snacks, and then Olivia and I headed to voice lessons while B and Jacob headed to the golf course.  Olivia’s lessons went very well – she’s been practicing “Memories” from Cats – and her teacher said that her voice is wonderful.

After her lesson, we headed to the golf course to watch the second half of Jacob’s match.  He’s only allowed to have two people with him walking the course, so Olivia and I had to watch from afar since Brian was his caddy.

For the middle school matches, they play nine holes, and there is a maximum of double bogey on each hole so they can save time.  Otherwise, it would take forever to get all of the kids through the course.  Jacob ended up getting the max on every hole, but he improved with each hole.  The other two players in his group both beat him by one stroke overall, but he was totally robbed on his last putt.  He had a long putt on the last hole, and his ball totally hit the edge of the hole, but it didn’t go in.  Had it gone in, he would have had a bogey and been tied with the other two kids, but unfortunately, it just barely skirted around the hole.

Not too shabby for his very first match, though!  And he had a great time which is truly all that matters to us.  We just want him to have fun, and we also love that he’s trying something new!

After the match was over, Brian and Jacob swung through the Chick-Fil-A drive-through to pick up dinner for all of us.  I hadn’t planned to cook because I wasn’t sure what to expect for the timing of his match, and I had assumed I wouldn’t have much time to cook afterward.

After dinner, the kids got showered and I did an abs workout.  I haaaate abs workouts because they always hurt my back (even the ones that say they’re supposed to have low impact on the back), so I rarely do them.  I’m trying to incorporate them more into my workouts, though.

After that was done, we got all caught up on America’s Got Talent, and then after the kiddos went to bed, B and I watched Vampire Diaries.

Friday, September 9

Friday morning, I dropped the kiddos at school and then I worked on the blog and organized recipes for the rest of the day until it was time to pick them up.  We were supposed to have had an all-school tailgate Friday evening before the football game, but the weather was dreary and drizzly all day, so they called it off.  We considered going to the game, but opted out, and I was glad we did because it rained a bit more throughout the evening.

Instead, I did an arms workout, B grabbed Five Guys for dinner, and then we mixed up some Moscow Mules and watched a movie with the kiddos.  We popped some cotton candy flavored popcorn which made the whole house smell divine, and then we watched Lost Ollie on Netflix.  It’s a mini-series, so it’s four long episodes, and we made it through three of them before it was time to get the kids in the bed.  The whole thing was just depressing and a little weird and I wasn’t a fan at all, so I ended up sleeping through some of it.  The kids also talked about how sad it was, and I really couldn’t tell if they liked it or not.

After they went to bed, it was two more episodes of Vampire Diaries for B and me, and then we headed to bed, too.

Saturday, September 10

Saturday, we had zero plans for the entire day, and the weather was dreary yet again, so we ended up watching college football from 9 AM until 11 PM.  LOL.  I kid you not, we had college football on in our house for 14 hours starting with ESPN College GameDay at 9 AM.  And you know what?  It was GLORIOUS!!!!  Absolutely no regrets.

I made waffles with our pumpkin waffle maker for breakfast and then I parked it on the couch with a blanket and Maui in my lap and a cup of hot cinnamon tea in my Georgia mug, and I watched College GameDay with B.

At 11, I finally got up, put on some workout clothes, and got in a good cardio workout, and I also got some laundry started.  So, it wasn’t a total lazy day.  ;o)

After my workout, I made grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch, and then after lunch, we watched the Bama/Texas game and – OMG – Bama fans, y’all okay today?!  Haha.  That was a crazy game, and I cannot believe that Texas almost beat y’all.

I got a couple of things done here and there during the game – I finally got the front porch swept off, and I got it decorated for fall.  It’s not quite done yet, but I’m loving our new doormat that Jacob and I found at Hobby Lobby the other day!  That whole set was only $22.50 because, in true Hobby Lobby fashion, both pieces were 50% off.

I still need to find some big fake pumpkins to put out there (or buy real ones if I can find some that don’t cost a billion dollars), and then it’ll be done!

In between the Bama/Texas game and the Georgia game, I showered and got into my Saturday best (AKA Georgia stuff), and then I finally got everything photographed for an upcoming blog post on Wednesday.  I’m finally sharing my hot toddy recipe because so many of you have asked for it over the years!  ‘Tis almost the season for sickness, after all.  Yeesh.

At 4, we watched Georgia trounce Samford, and B and I cracked open some beers while we watched.  We have season tickets to all home games every year so we could have gone to the game, but we opted to sell these since we were playing such a small school.  Plus, the September games are typically brutal because of the heat, so it’s rare for us to make it to an outdoor September game.  It ended up being quite cool on Saturday (like 74 for the high or something like that), but it rained on and off a bit, so we didn’t regret not going.

The kids made bracelets with my bead collection while we watched the game, and then we had food delivered from our favorite pizza place in town for dinner.  After our game was over, we watched the Florida/Kentucky game that started at 7 and the kids retreated to the playroom upstairs to watch a movie.  I told y’all we watched a ton of football on Saturday.  Lol.

Sunday, September 11

Sunday morning, I got up a little earlier than usual to offset my Saturday laziness, and we had cinnamon rolls for breakfast as we always do.  The rest of the morning was spent catching up on things around the house, knocking out a couple of minor projects, and getting in a good yoga workout.  I also watched some of the 9/11 Memorial service and per usual, I cried.  It’s been 21 years and that coverage still makes me cry just as easily as it did that very day.  I will absolutely never forget how I felt that day.  That feeling is just as fresh every single year on the anniversary as it was that day in 2001.

Late in the morning, we all got showered and ready, and we headed to my mother-in-law and step-father-in-law’s house for Sunday lunch.  Brian’s aunt and uncle were passing through on their road trip back home to Florida, so we were able to spend time with them on Sunday, too.

The rest of the afternoon was spent prepping for Monday, working in my office just a little bit, and relaxing before we headed to my parents’ house for Sunday dinner.  My Momma made pork chops, rice, black eyed peas, green beans, garlic cheesy biscuits, and Ritz Pecan Pie for dessert.  To say we were all stuffed by the end of the day is an understatement.  One of these days I need to share her Ritz Pecan Pie recipe on the blog.  It is soooo delicious!!

Happy Tuesday, y’all!

  1. It's amazing how fast those short weeks can just fly by! It sounds like you had a great week. I too always try to get my kids to focus on having fun and trying new things rather than focusing on being the best and winning all the time; no one can win all the time at all the things anyway. It sounds like Jacob really enjoyed his first match and did well!
