Our Weekend - The One with Baseball Tryouts and New Savings Accounts

Hey, y’all!  Now that summer is over I’m back to doing shorter weekend recaps rather than full weekly recaps, so this will probably be one of the shortest posts I’ve done in a while.

Friday afternoon I picked Maui up from the groomer (look how cute!) and then she and I went to pick up the kids from school.  They both had a great week back (aside from Jacob’s sickness on Monday) and I think it was pretty safe to say that we were all ready for the weekend and some down time.  I think my body is still in shock from waking up at 6 AM all week.  Man, I wish I was a morning person.  Sadly, I’m not.

Friday evening when B made it home from work, we had to stop and grab some baseball pants and cleats for Jacob for his tryouts the next morning (nothing like waiting ‘til the last minute), and then we headed out to dinner to celebrate my father-in-law for his birthday.  It was back to his house afterward for Dairy Queen Blizzard cake and presents, and then we all went home and pretty much crashed.  It had been an exhausting week since it was our first week back to school, so the kids fell asleep mere minutes after getting into bed and I fell straight to sleep on the couch while B and I watched some shows.

Saturday morning we had to be up bright and early for Jacob’s baseball tryouts… or so we thought.  We arrived on time, only to find that he had already been assigned to a team and he, in fact, did not have to try out.  The mix-up was due to some lack of communication on our new coach’s part and I’m just hoping the lack of communication doesn’t continue throughout the season.  Since this is Jacob’s first time playing baseball, we don’t know really know what exactly to expect, so it would be helpful to have a coach who communicates well.  Hopefully this was just a one-time thing and it’ll get better soon!

After we were turned away, we were faced with an unexpectedly free morning, so we decided to make the most of it and (FINALLY!) open savings accounts for the kids!  This activity was on our summer bucket list last year, as well as this year, and we just haven’t been able to make it happen until now.  It feels good to give it a big ol’ check off the list!

Opening the accounts ended up taking a good hour which was way longer than anticipated, and by the time we left the bank it was nearly lunch time.  Jacob requested Jason’s Deli because – free ice cream – so we ate there and then headed home to spend the rest of the afternoon.

I’ve been feeling pretty bad all week because my reflux has been going nuts + the fall allergens are emerging, so I spent the rest of the afternoon curled up on the couch with Maui reading my book.  I did manage to get two loads of laundry done so the afternoon wasn’t completely unproductive, but it was nice to spend most of the afternoon relaxing.  I rarely let myself do that during the school year, but it was much needed this weekend.

Saturday evening we headed to 5:30 mass and then we went out for Mexican with my mom’s extended fam for dinner.  I was peer pressured (I kid!) into drinking a large marg by my cousin (love you, Shelby!) and my momma and my aunts and cousin and I all ended up getting loud and laughing hysterically all evening at the restaurant… hence the reason I always drink tequila in moderation.  ;o)  I ended up falling straight to sleep on the couch again Saturday night after the kids went to bed… if I don’t keep it moving after having tequila, then I fall straight to sleep instead.  Haha.

Sunday morning B and I worked on his office a little more and I’m happy to report we’re nearing the end.  He has a ton of projects that he’ll be working on for months to come, but overall, the office is mostly cleaned out and organized, and it’s almost completely decorated, too, aside from getting new furniture somewhere down the road.  Most importantly, I can now walk in and out of there to retrieve decorations from our storage closet without tripping over something, walking into something, or not being able to get to something.  It’s very, very nice.

We had lunch at my mother-in-law and step-father-in-law’s house Sunday afternoon and they made a delicious spread that filled me to the brim, as usual.  The weather has been just awful here lately – the heat has been in the triple digits with heat indexes even higher than that – so we’ve been spending little to no time outside.  Since it was too hot to play outside after lunch we all congregated in the play room and watched the kids play after we were done eating.

Sunday evening was dinner at my parents’ house, and we spent the evening filling in my family on the first week of school over a delicious dinner and a bottle of wine.  This weekend was fairly uneventful, but we’re reveling in the slowness since it’s about to get crazy for the next four months.  B and I were recently looking at our calendars for September, October, November, and December, and it’s going to be pure insanity.  Between baseball and ballet, high school football games and college football games, loads of holiday happenings, several concerts, and a fall break getaway, it’s going to be insane.  Super fun and amazingly wonderful, but insane.

Happy Monday, y’all!  T-minus five days until the return of college football!!!!  It’s almost the most wonderful four months of the year!!!!

    1. Yes it should! We didn't want to plan too much because we knew everyone would be exhausted. That 6 AM wake-up call is rough!

  9. FYI- I ordered one of the rugs you mentioned earlier in July I think. It had THE WORST SMELL ever! Very chemical. I don't know if any one else had that problem but back it went. Be careful ordering rugs from Amazon friends! Much better to check out your local Home Goods, etc. You will know what you are getting before you buy. Thankfully I only had to run it back over to my drop off location.

    1. Such a bummer that you had an issue with yours. We've ordered two different rugs from Amazon now and both were beautiful and in perfect condition with no chemical smells or other issues! I would 100% order another rug from Amazon! I'm sure yours was probably just an isolated incident. Good luck finding something else!

  14. I am looking forward to one of those slower weekends myself this coming weekend! I bet it feels so good to have the kids accounts opened - I know you have been wanting to do that for so long! I am cracking up at the marg comment, because that would totally be me. All in all sounds like a great weekend!

  15. What a fun weekend! Your dog is so cute and it's good you were able to make the most of not needing to be at baseball and get something crossed off your list!

Hope that your week is off to a great start :)

  16. Sounds like a fun weekend! Sorry to hear about the lack of communication. Hopefully things will get better with that. I didn't realize there was fall baseball. I don't think they do that around here. The boys will be playing fall soccer. Oh Mexican is one of my favorites! What a fun night out!
