Our Weekend - Coming Down From Our Beach High

Happy Monday!  (Said no one ever, especially on a day where they have to go back to work after nine glorious days off.)

If you’ve been following along with me on Instagram, then you probably already know that we’ve been at the beach for the last week.  We had another amazing trip, and I can’t wait to recap it all here on the blog, but I have 1,500+ pictures to wade through and edit, so the first recap probably won’t be up until Wednesday.

Since we were at the beach Friday and we drove home Saturday morning, there’s not a whole lot to recap here since I’ll be saving that part for the beach recaps.  Saturday afternoon we arrived home around 2 PM and the rest of the day was spent doing five loads of laundry, getting everything unpacked and put away, and grocery shopping since there was nothing to eat in the house.  We kept dinner low-key and made some scrambled eggs, grits, bacon, and toast for dinner, and then we put the kiddos down for an early bedtime.  We were worried that they wouldn’t be tired after being in the car all morning, but it turns out that beachin’ all week will wear you out, and they were both out like lights by 8:30 PM.

Saturday afternoon Olivia was really whiny and clingy and she barely touched her lunch or dinner.  She looked flushed and she kept complaining that she had a stomachache as well.  Her eyes were glassy and her eyelids were heavy, and she was generally lethargic even after her nap, so I was worried she was coming down with something.  I had just read an article on the way home about dry drowning and secondary drowning (SUCH a terrifying thing – if you’re a parent, PLEASE educate yourself on it) and since we had just spent a week in the ocean and the pool, of course, my mind went to a bad place and I was totally paranoid that something bad was happening.  B and I kept an extra close eye on her all evening as we caught up on our shows from the week, and then she came and got in the bed with us in the middle of the night, so I was relieved to have her close.

Sunday morning she was back to her normal, bubbly, happy, and super chatty self (LAWD, she never stops talking!) – no more flushed cheeks, glassy eyes, or missing appetite – so we’re not sure what exactly it was… maybe just exhaustion from the long week?  As a matter of fact, she slept until 8 and Jacob slept until 9 Sunday morning!  Unheard of!

We spent the morning catching up on emails, bill paying, and getting ourselves prepared to snap back to reality, and then we went over to my MIL’s for our usual Sunday lunch.  My nephew’s birthday is Tuesday so we showered him with gifts and cookie cake, and then the kids threw the Frisbee in the back yard… one of their new favorite things!  I also checked out my MIL's garden... it's coming along so well!  We had loads of fresh blueberries with lunch, and next weekend she should have some jalapenos to make jalapeno bites (which reminds me that I need to give you guys that recipe... because OMG, so good!).

Sunday evening, my parents were just arriving back in town from visiting my bro, SIL, and nephew in Texas, so my mom didn’t cook.  Instead we all met up for Mex so we could tell each other all about our respective trips over margaritas.

It was nice to be reunited with all of our peeps and get back into the swing of things… even though I wish the “swing of things” did not include work today.  Hehe.

See you back tomorrow for a special vacation recap by the numbers!

  3. Glad Olivia is feeling better. I bet she was just exhausted. I read the same article about dry drowning and literally I read it every summer and every summer I get so paranoid! Even though Ive heard from multiple people that it's super uncommon. Hope you have a good monday getting back into the swing of things!

  5. I've read that article or one similar. I also read one last summer. It makes me really paranoid and with as much time as we spend at the pool and lake during the summer I watch the kids like hawks after and check on them numerous times after they go to bed. So scary! Glad Olivia is feeling better. Have a great week.

  6. It's so hard to get back to reality after so much time off!! Oh my I would have been just as terrified as you with how Olivia was feeling, thank God she is OK! I am totally terrified of dry & secondary drowning and after swim I check on my kids multiple times after they go to bed. Ugh. Anyway - I can't wait to read your recaps!!

  7. I'm so excited for your beach vaycay recap! Coming back is never fun, but coming back to have an extra day to unload and do laundry seems to make the transition back to reality that much easier. We leave soon for little summer getaway and I'm getting suuuuper excited. I'm happy to hear Olivia is okay. That dry drowning stuff scares the crap out of me, especially since we live on a lake. Ugh. I think I'm scared of everything these days. This mothering gig is no joke!

  9. What a great way to end your vacation. The laundry when we get home from a trip is always insane...but I am always really excited to get started (weird I know). I am glad that Olivia is doing better, it is no fun to have a little one sick. That dry drowning is so scary, but important to know about. I can't wait for your beach recap.

  21. I saw the Today Show segment on the secondary drowning and was terrified after that! I can't imagine how you felt haha! And the worst part about coming home from vacation is the laundry and the unpacking! I felt like I was sweeping up sand in our kitchen forever because my husband didn't wipe his stuff up haha

You seem so much like me with how you think about things and worry - I do the exact same thing!

    1. Thank you, Autumn! Yes, girl, I worry waaaay too much. It's definitely something that I wish I could change about myself, but I'm certain that it's innate. My mom is a worrier, too, so I'm sure that I got it from her. Thanks, Mom. Haha.
