My Skin Care and Makeup Routine

Go ahead and file this under “Posts I Never Thought I’d Do,” but you asked for it and I’m delivering!  Ever since I have started showing my face more on Instagram stories these last couple of months, I’ve had several requests to do a post about skincare and/or makeup and about a bazillion requests to share the mascara that I use.

Y’all, makeup is one of the things that I don’t care much about, and I honestly don’t spend that much time on it, nor do I even really know how to “do makeup” properly, so please know going in that I’m only doing this post because it was requested several times.

We all have things that we love and things that we don’t, and this is one of the things that I don’t love.  I wear makeup because it makes me feel more put together and confident, but basically, my eyes glaze over when researching or writing about it.  Haha.  If makeup is your thing, though, that’s awesome... hopefully that means you’ll enjoy this post.  <3

Also, please know that most of the time I do use a filter on Instagram stories when I get on there to chat, so some of what you are seeing on there is the filter.  If you ever want to know if someone is using a filter on their stories, just look at the top left corner underneath the person’s name.  The filter and/or song they use will be there.  ;o)

Because makeup is not my thing, I do not spend a lot of money on it, and therefore, every single item that I use can be found at Target, Walmart, and/or Amazon.  I have only set foot in Sephora like five times in my whole life, and I have only used department store makeup once… in eighth grade… because Clinique was so trendy and it’s all I wanted for my eighth-grade graduation present.  Turns out, it wasn’t worth the money to me, personally, so I went straight back to drugstore makeup right after that and that’s what I’ve been using ever since.  Haha.

So now that you have the back story, here’s my skin care and makeup routine…

Morning

Face Wash

I shower first thing every single morning because I can’t wake up without my shower, and while I’m in there, I use this CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser.  My dermatologist highly recommended it, so that’s what I use.  It’s gentle on my skin and it doesn’t dry it out too much.  It leaves my face feeling like a clean slate which is perfect for makeup.

Moisturizer

Immediately after showering, I apply this Neutrogena Hydro Boost Face Moisturizer and I loooove it.  It’s light, it’s not greasy, and it doesn’t make my face too shiny like some other moisturizers do.  Again, after applying it, my face looks and feels like a clean slate – not too dry and not too slimy.  Just right.

Foundation

After applying my moisturizer, it’s time for makeup!  First up, I apply this Loreal Infallible Pro-Glow foundation.  It is ahhhhmazing.  And I just found out they discontinued it.  Sigh.  This foundation is super lightweight, but it provides full coverage without looking too makeup-y, and it gives my skin a glow-y finish.  Why they discontinued it is beyond me, but I’m going to try the Loreal Infallible Pro-Matte foundation next and see if it’s similar.  Oh, and just a quick note – I apply my foundation with my fingers.  I know a lot of people love beauty blenders and whatnot, but y’all, my fingers work just fine!  I told you, I’m not fancy when it comes to makeup.

Powder

After foundation is done, I apply this Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Loose Powder… just a little dusting over my whole face, and I apply it with this makeup brush.  I love this powder because it’s so light, it doesn’t get cake-y, and it’s breathable.  It gives your face a non-shiny finish but allows the skin to glow a bit, too, if that makes sense.

Blush

Once powder is done, I apply this CoverGirl Trublend High Pigment Blush, and y’all, let me tell you… a little bit goes a long way with this!  I only apply a slight dusting with this makeup brush and then I use clean, dry fingers to blend it into the rest of my face.

Eye Liner - Top

That’s it for the skin portion of my makeup, so next up, is eyes.  I use this Wet n Wild Eye Liner first, just across the tops of my eyelids.  I have tried a ton of liquid liners, and no other liquid liners go on as smoothly and easily as this cheap Wet n Wild eye liner.  It is a huge winner in my book and I’ve used it for a billion years.  And it's only $3!  Haha.

Eye Liner – Bottom

For my bottom lids, I use a basic eye shadow felt brush (the ones that come in the eye shadow packs that nobody ever uses) to apply this eyeshadow.  I’ve found that eye shadow stays in place better under my lids than an eye pencil or liquid liner, so that’s what I’ve always used.

Eye Shadow

I had an eye shadow palette that I loved for years, and after it was discontinued years and years ago, I was never able to find anything comparable… until just recently!  Last year, I found this CoverGirl TruNaked eye shadow palette, and it has been absolutely perfect for my eyes and skin tone.  I am completely obsessed.  I use the small side of an eye shadow brush similar to this one to apply a thin layer of the shade on the right all over my eyelids to the crease.  Then, I use the thicker side of an eye shadow brush similar to this one to apply a thin layer of the shade on the left to my brow bone and the insides of my eyelids to brighten my eyes.  After that’s done, I use the thick side of the brush to sweep a very thin layer of the color on the left side over my entire eye – right over the darker color – to mute the darkness of that shade a little bit.  And it looks perfect.  I know that’s not the proper way to do eye shadow, but it works for me, so that’s all that matters, I guess.  Haha.

Eyebrow Pencil

After my eye shadow is done, I verrrry lightly use this eyebrow pencil to help define my brows a bit better.  The older I get, the fewer eyebrow hairs I have, so this has become necessary in the last couple of years.  You can file this under “Things I Never Thought I’d Do,” too, but here we are.  And I love that this eyebrow pencil comes with a little brush on the other end.  I do always use it to groom my brows a bit after the pencil goes on.

Mascara

Finally, the piece de resistance… the mascara.  This mascara is everything, y’all!  I found it about a year ago, and it has completely changed my whole makeup look.  This mascara is so inexpensive, but two coats gives me the longest, thickest lashes I’ve ever had in my entire life!  I mean, seriously.  It is the best mascara I’ve ever used.  EVER.  By far.  If you take away anything from this post, let it be to try this mascara.

The best part?  It’s under $10!!!!

Lipstick

My favorite lipstick shade that I wore for years was also discontinued recently, but it ended up being a good thing because if it hadn’t been, I would have never come across this shade (Pink Wink), and this shade suits me so much better!  Obviously, the shade you choose will be dependent on your own skin tone and whatever suits you the best, but I do highly recommend this Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick.  It’s hydrating and it goes on smooth, and it stays on for a good long while!  And it’s less than $6 on Amazon.

And that is my full morning skin and makeup routine!

Night

Face Wash

Every evening, I use this Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Cleansing Gel to remove my makeup.  It removes all of my makeup easily, including all of my eye makeup, and it smells so fresh and clean.  I absolutely love the scent!

Moisturizer

After my face is clean and dry, I apply a thin layer of this Cerave Moisturizing Cream.  This was another recommendation by my dermatologist, and I absolutely love it.  This cream is a little thicker than the cream I use in the morning, but it’s not greasy at all, and it hydrates my face so well all night, and it leaves my face feeling super soft.

And that’s it, y’all!  I suppose some people would view this routine as high-maintenance, and some would view it as low-maintenance depending on where you fall on the makeup/skincare/beauty spectrum.  Overall, it only takes me about 15 minutes to do my entire makeup routine in the morning, and about three minutes to do my evening routine, so it feels fairly low-maintenance to me.

To all of you who have been asking for this post, I hope you found it helpful, and to those of you who are beauty experts, I hope you didn’t cringe too much when you were reading this.  Hahahaha.

Happy Wednesday, y’all!
