Favorite Fall Scents

Emily and Sarah are hosting a fun fall link-up this Wednesday about our favorite fall scents, so I thought I’d pop in on this Labor Day and share mine since I’m all up in my fall feels!

Scent is a powerful thing, and like most people, I have certain ones that I love for summer, certain ones that I love for fall, and certain ones that I love for Christmas.  Here are my favorites for fall, broken down by category…

Favorite Fall Essential Oils

I started using essential oils just over a year ago, and I went from always burning a Bath and Body Works candle in our home to always diffusing oils.  While I still keep B&B candles on hand, I’ve honestly found that I like essential oils better.  They’re cleaner and more natural and they don’t give me headaches like the candles sometimes do.

Some of my favorite essential oils for fall are…

Cinnamon Bark
Clove
Nutmeg
Orange
Bergamot
Patchouli
Eucalyptus Globulus
Wintergreen

Favorite Fall Diffuser Blend

Last fall, I played around with the different fall scented oils to try to recreate the Bath and Body Works Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin candle, and I have perfected it!!  It’s almost identical, but I actually like the oils better because the cinnamon is a little bit more prominent.

Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin:
5 drops Cinnamon Bark
3 drops Clove
2 drops Nutmeg
2 drops Thieves (optional)

Young Living has their own creation called Pumpkin Spice, and one of these days I’m going to grab some Cardamom so I can try it.  It sounds amazing…

Pumpkin Spice:
3 drops Cinnamon Bark
2 drops Bergamot
1 drop Cardamom
1 drop Nutmeg

If you’re interested in getting started with essential oils, you can see this page on my blog that tells all about why I use them, how I use them, and how to purchase them.

Favorite Fall Candle

My all-time favorite scented candle for fall will always and forever be Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin from Bath and Body Works.  I remember the first time I smelled it... about 13 or 14 years ago, Brian and I were walking along the crowded streets of downtown Athens, GA on a college football game day.  The air was chilly, the trees around campus were bursting in shades of red and orange and yellow, and the excitement in the air was palpable.

We were enjoying the hustle and bustle of downtown Athens and doing a little bit of shopping before the game started… I always love shopping in Athens because they (obviously) always have the best red and black stuff.  I ducked into Red Dress Boutique to see what goodies I could find, and the scent hit me instantly.  It was love at first smell.  I walked straight over to the cash register and asked the salesgirl what that quintessential fall scent was, and she pointed to the Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin candle burning on the counter.

I put the name in my phone, and the day we got home from Athens I headed straight to my local Bath and Body Works to load up, and the rest is history.  I’ve bought that same scent year after year after year and there is nothing like pulling it out on September 1 and taking that first whiff.

I’m immediately transported to my happy place – Athens, GA on game day.  And I’m also now reminded of years past of cozy fall evenings at home.  It’s amazing how something so simple as smelling a candle can make you so happy.

Favorite Scent to Wear

I also have scents that I wear for each season.  I have a spring and summer scent, a fall scent, and a winter scent.  I used to wear actual perfume back in high school and maybe a little bit in college (I can’t remember), but after that, I stopped wearing it because it gave me headaches.  It was just too heavy.

I switched to Bath and Body Works creams and sprays about 20 years ago, and I never looked back.  My fall scent has been Black Raspberry Vanilla from Bath and Body Works since it came into existence probably 12 or 13 years ago?  Maybe longer?  I honestly don’t know how long it’s been, but I do know that they retired it several years ago and I was crushed.

Fortunately, I always buy in bulk, so I had enough to get me through a few more fall seasons, and when I saw that my supply was getting low, I did what any desperate person would do, and I turned to Amazon and eBay to see if anyone was selling them.  Haha.  Sure enough, I was able to find a lot of six brand new ones, so I bought that a few years ago and I’ve been working my way through it since then.

The scent is a combination of raspberries, blackberries, vanilla orchid, sandalwood, and cashmere woods, and it’s the perfect blend that just screams fall to me.  I know B&B has actual pumpkin and apple fall lotions, but as much as I love pumpkin and apple, I’ve always found it strange to wear them.  Not sure why…

Miscellaneous

In addition to all of the yummy scents above, there is also a handful of other random lovely scents that remind me of fall…

Chimney smoke in the air on a cool night
The apple orchard
Caramel
Marshmallows toasting over a campfire
Freshly cut pumpkin
Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks
Pumpkin pie
Cinnamon sticks
Candy corn
Apple pie baking in the oven

  6. I agree with most of this but I can not stand the smell of freshly cut pumpkin (in fact pumpkin carving makes me gag)... but I do love the pumpkin spice/ cinnamon scents so so much.

    1. Oh that's a bummer! I love the scent, probably just because I associate it with carving and all things fall and cozy!

  9. I am definitely going to try your sweet cinnamon pumpkin concoction in my diffuser today! That lotion from B&BW sounds so good - do they ever bring it back?
