Five on Friday - Dimmer Lamp, Uga Print, Rock Tumbler, and a Family Treasure

Hey y’all!  Happy Friday!  I can’t believe this is my last Friday post in January.  January flew by!  It used to be my least favorite month of the whole year, so it used to drag terribly, but a few years ago something changed and now I love it.  We have a lot of downtime in January because there’s no baseball and we also don’t have any birthdays or major holidays, so it gives us some much-needed time to come down off of the Christmas craziness and get things done around the house.

I’ve been in clean-out and refresh mode, and there’s still so much I want to do!  Baseball is now looming, and I’m sad that time is running out!  I know most of you don’t agree (you might even want to smack me for suggesting this), but I wish we had just one more week in January!

Let’s get to some favorites, shall we?

O N E – Lamp with Dimmer

Jacob has decided that he likes to sleep with a little bit of light in his room now, but a nightlight doesn’t really provide as much as he likes.  Lamps are too bright and so is pretty much everything else we’ve tried, so I started searching for a touch lamp… do y’all remember those?  Where you tap the lamp base and the light goes on and off?  Well, I found this one at Target.com and it has three settings – low, medium, and high.  I was concerned about the low setting not being low enough, but I ordered it anyway to give it a try.

Well, before that lamp ever delivered, the kids and I made a trip to Target, and it was there that I stumbled upon this lamp, and it’s brilliant because it has a full-on dimmer switch!  Now I’ve seen light switches in homes with dimmers and I’ve seen lamps with 2-3 different levels of brightness, but I’ve never seen a dimmer switch on a lamp!  I would have never even thought to search for something like that.  I knew that was exactly what we were looking for, so we went ahead and purchased it, and we’ll just return the touch lamp or use it somewhere else.

The lamp with the dimmer switch works with any standard 60-watt bulb, so you don’t have to buy a special bulb.  There’s a dial on the cord that you can twist to find the perfect bright or dim setting and everything in between.  It comes in several different colors, but the white looks great in Jacob’s bedroom.  He is loving this lamp so much and I’m happy that he’s happy!  I only wish we’d had these for both of the kids’ bedrooms when they were babies… as well as one in our bedroom when the kids were sleeping in our bedroom!  They would be SO HANDY in a baby nursery.

T W O – Uga Print

My friend, Amanda, painted a sweet picture of Uga, the mascot of our beloved Georgia Bulldogs.  She had prints made of the original, and we bought a print from her to hang in our front sitting room.  She just happened to drop the print off the day that we won the National Championship (for the first time in 41 years), so I’m now calling it our Lucky Uga.  :o)  I finally got him framed and hung this weekend, and it’s definitely a new favorite!

Amanda can paint pretty much anything, but she loves to paint family pets and also florals and landscapes, so if you are ever in need of a commission, let me know and I can put you in touch with her!

T H R E E – Rock Tumbler

This rock tumbler has been the kids’ favorite this week!  We got this for them as a joint gift for Christmas, and they started their first round of rocks last week.  This set came with a pack of rough gemstones, four polishing grits, a sifter, and the tumbler.  Two weekends ago, the kids put their gemstones in with the first grit, it tumbled aaaallll week, and then last weekend they had to switch to the second bag of grit.  We took a peek at the gemstones before they added the second bag of grit and there was a big difference!

Here’s a picture of the gemstones before:

And here’s a picture of the gemstones after:

There are still three bags to go (we’re on bag 2 now, and then there are two more bags after this one), and then their gemstones will be done.  Each bag of grit gets progressively finer, so all of the gemstones end up perfectly smooth and polished in the end.

The tumbler does have to run 24/7 and it does make noise, so it’s not something you’d want to keep in your house.  We plugged ours into our outdoor utility closet, so we don’t hear it at all inside, and it doesn’t make any noise that the neighbors can hear either.

If you have a rock and gemstones collector in your house, or even if your kiddos just love STEM activities, this would be the perfect gift!  We highly recommend it!

F O U R – Big Daddy’s Old Typewriter

My Momma and Daddy received this gem a few weeks ago, and I just think it’s the coolest thing.  My Big Daddy (my momma’s daddy) was a radio personality, and he used this old typewriter throughout his whole career.  If this thing could talk, I bet it would have a million stories to tell.  Such a treasure for my parents to have.  I tried to convince them that I need it in my house, but they didn’t budge.  I don’t blame them.  ;o)

F I V E – Instagram Top 9

I share my Instagram Top 9 every year in my year-end recap, but the website wasn’t working this year, and therefore, I didn’t have this available to include in the post before it went live.  I’ve since gone back and added it, but I wanted to share it here since most people probably missed it.

My poor girl’s broken elbow picture ended up being the most engaged-with post of the whole year.  We received so many comments and well wishes and were surrounded by so much love during that time, and I was very grateful for all of it.  It made the whole ordeal a lot more bearable.

As for the rest of the Top 9 from the year, beach pictures are still faves and so are pictures of my office, but the thing I love the most is that Mama Cass made it into the Top 9!!  She is one of my very favorite people and I love that y’all love her as much as I do.  <3

    1. That's such a great idea! We've always brought a nightlight, but it doesn't usually provide much light.
