The Last Weekend of Summer

Well, summer is officially over and Jacob is back at school today!  Not that it makes a huge difference or anything... since I work full-time we’re up and out the door every morning regardless, but homework is about to be back and from what I hear first grade is where it starts to get real.  EEK.

Anyway, Friday we took Jacob to school to meet his new teacher.  He was able to see his new classroom, see his new desk, see which friends were in his class, and learn a little about what to expect in first grade.  He also turned in his summer homework that he worked so hard on, and he looked like such a big boy turning the folder in to his teacher.  He is so excited, and we are praying this is going to be another great year!

Friday evening we decided to go downtown.  We had dinner at one of our favorite local places, and I know I’ve mentioned it on here before, but they have the best salad I’ve ever had in my entire life – spinach leaves, grilled steak tips, strawberries, goat cheese, and pecans topped with a poppyseed dressing.  Oh.  My.  Word.  It is fantastic.  I would eat it every day if I could.

After dinner the kiddos begged to go to Kilwin’s for ice cream, and they didn’t really have to beg too hard, because B and I are known to never turn down ice cream.  ;o)  On the way there we walked right by our favorite mural, so we had to stop and take a few pics!

Every time we stop at that mural, we always joke that one day we’re going to take a picture with this other mural across the street.  It’s not really a mural that’s supposed to be there, though… it’s pretty much just graffiti.  Lol.  But the kids – and when I say kids, I mean mostly Brian – thought it would be hilarious to try to make the same face that the weird thing on the wall is doing, so they did.  And in my personal opinion they did not succeed.  Lol.  That thing on the wall looks like he’s making a dorky face, but B looks plain mad, Jacob is cracking up, and Olivia just looks disgusted… look at her eyebrows!  Haha.  I told B that all he needed to do was just make his regular face and he would have succeeded at looking dorky like the thing on the wall.  Hehe.  I crack myself up sometimes.

Anyhoo, after that we finally made it to the ice cream shop.  I had the chocolate chip cookie dough, Jacob had his beloved Superman (he never strays), Olivia opted for two chocolates instead of ice cream (she is not my child), and B got… wait for it… s’mores ice cream.  Y’all, I tried a bite and I am KICKING myself for not getting that.  It was so flipping good.  Beth, if you have a Kilwins near you, go try it!!

Jacob also let me try a bite of the blue part of his Superman ice cream.  The blue part is blue moon ice cream (which you can get by itself) and Emily always talks about how it’s her favorite, so I’ve been wanting to try it.  It was so good, too, and Emily, you’re right!  It’s so hard to even explain what it tastes like!

The rest of the evening was for strolling around downtown, getting home and getting the kiddos in bed, and then watching two more episodes of Bloodline.

Saturday morning I had the urge to do all the things so I pretty much did.  I cleaned and dusted all surfaces, swept and mopped all the hard floors, vacuumed all the carpet, cleaned all the toilets, did the dishes, did four loads of laundry, and picked up all of junk that was lying around from the week.  Meanwhile B mowed again – sheesh, we’ve had a ton of rain and we can’t keep up with the grass – and the kids watched Finding Dory.

Again.

But it’s better than Moana.  Or Trolls.

My oh my we have watched those a million times!

Saturday afternoon while Olivia was napping for all of 45 minutes, B took Jacob to our local Dick’s Sporting Goods because they were having a special sale for the kids who are playing in our local soccer league.  They picked up his cleats, socks, and shin guards because he’ll be starting soon!  He was so proud to show them to me when they got home!  And why does he look three years older in this picture??  Must be the cleats!

My grandmother had to be hospitalized this weekend, so Saturday evening looked a bit different than usual.  We ran to church, grabbed a quick bite at one of our favorite local pubs, and then we headed to the hospital to visit with her.  She looked so great, and she was pretty much just ready to go home.  She started having these weird fainting spells while she was on vacation in Boston this past week, and the doctors found that they think she’s having some heart rhythm issues.  They are supposed to be putting in a pacemaker today, so if you have a minute, would you mind saying a little prayer for her?  We’re not used to seeing her like this and she hasn’t loved not having her independence this past week, so we’re ready to have our spunky and spry Mama Cass back!

While we were there, the kids took over her wheel chair and they had a blast wheeling each other around!  I’m sure all of the other patients at the hospital were glad when we left.  Haha.

Once we got the kids in the bed, B and I watched two more episodes of Bloodline, and y’all, I’m so confused.  This series has not been hard to follow along with at all and y’all know I have been loving every single second of it, but the episode we watched last night was just so weird!  B and I are now both completely lost.  I think we only have like three more episodes left in the whole series, so hopefully everything will be tied up in a nice little bow at the end.

Sunday morning was for lounging.  I worked on our command center in the kitchen a bit to get it filled with all of the new information for the upcoming school year and Jacob worked on his weekend homework.  Yes, the year hasn’t even officially started yet, and we already had a little project to do to turn in on the first day of school.

Sunday afternoon we had lunch and played in the back yard at my MIL’s, and then we came home and did a little more lounging and preparing for first week back to school.

Sunday evening we celebrated my Daddy because his birthday is tomorrow.  My Momma made his favorite, spaghetti – or SPO-ghetti as he calls it – and we had salad and garlic bread, and shared a bottle of wine.  Cake was for dessert, followed by presents, and then it was time to get the kiddos home and into bed for the new week!

Jacob has a half day today at school and they don’t have the after school care today, so I had to take the day off from work to be there to drop him off and pick him up early.  I’m planning on running a couple of errands and getting my closet cleaned out in the few hours that he’s at school, and then I’ll be waiting in the car line at noon.  It’ll be a tease to get a taste of that SAHM life!

RIP, summer!

  15. LOL at the other mural across the street! Sending all the hugs as the kiddos go back to school, and homework begins! I'm floored that they go back so early, there's still a good month and a 1/2 left on the calendar for summer. I don't recall going back to school til after Labor Day growing up.

  25. It's so crazy to me that kids are already starting school! When I was growing up (and even now in the county), school didn't start until after Labor Day! So an entire month earlier seems SO EARLY to me! That mural is amazing - I would definitely be taking photos of it every time I was near by!

    1. Yes, we go back very early here in Georgia. We've gone back in August as long as I can remember, but it used to be toward the end of August when I was young. Now it's the first week!
