The Weekend - First Football Game, a Birthday, and Lots of Downtime

By Friday evening we were half dead after the week we had last week, but Jacob’s school had their back-to-school social and first scrimmage football game that we didn’t want to miss.  After work and school we ate a quick dinner at home and then headed back to the school at 6:30.  There was an icecream/shaved ice truck there and it was free for all of the students, so we let the kids each pick a treat.  Jacob picked the Batman ice cream bar with bubble gum eyes, and Olivia quickly followed suit.

After they had made royal messes with their ice cream we headed into the football game.  Lots of kids from Jacob’s class were there, so we turned him and Olivia loose in the big open area next to the field where they happily climbed on a big sand pile and ran around with all of the other kids.  B and I were able to chat with some of our friends who have kids in Jacob’s class while we watched the game and also kept our eyes on the kiddos.

We left around halftime and headed home with two very exhausted but happy (and sweaty) kids.  When I got home, I realized I hadn’t snapped a picture of my evening OOTD, so I tried to take one in the kitchen and this is how it came out:

Haha.  Blogger hubby strikes again!

Both of the kids were out like lights within minutes of going to bed, so B and I snacked on the DQ Blizzards we had picked up on the way home and we settled in to start a new series.  (We finished Bloodline this past week – soooo good, you guys, but I still have so many questions!)  We have been hearing a lot of good things about Ozark, and since it’s a Netflix original like Bloodline, we figured it can’t be bad.  We ended up watching about an episode and a half before I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore, and then we headed up to bed.  My opinion is that it’s okay so far.  I’m not enamored right off the bat like I was with Bloodline, but it’s definitely unique, that’s for sure.

Saturday we literally stayed in PJs all day until it was time to go to dinner.  The kids watched Moana after breakfast while I tidied up the house a bit.  I also finished getting our command center ready for the new year.  Every new school year, I type up important notes (dismissal times, homework requirements, class schedules, school calendars, etc.) and I hang them on the bulletin board by our back door.  That way as we’re all rushing out each morning I can remind myself of everything that’s going on that day and remember what things we need to grab as we’re flying out the door.  It’s so convenient to have right there!

It was another cloudy day, so the kids did a lot of playing inside – mostly with Hot Wheels and the Uno Attack game that Jacob got for his birthday, and I was so pleased because they got along so well all day.  No fussing or fighting or arguing.  It was a Saturday miracle!  Haha.

After our lunch of sandwiches and fruit, I even had about 30 minutes to lay on the couch and read for a bit while the kids played some more.  I pretty much never relax during the day, so that was quite a treat.  It felt good to snuggle up on the couch with a fuzzy blanket to rest for a bit while hearing the happy sounds of the kiddos playing together.

Around 4 it was time to get ready… I stepped out of the bathroom while doing my makeup and I saw this:

The kids shouted, “Look at us!  We’re making snow angels!”

I just love them and their creativity!

We left a little after 5 to meet B’s family at Longhorn for dinner to celebrate my father-in-law for his birthday.  Then after dinner we went back over to his house for cake and presents.

We got the kids in the bed when we got home, and then B and I watched another episode and a half of Ozark.  I’m still not saying that I’m loving it – it’s really strange, y’all – but it’s mostly holding my attention.  I did start to doze off again while B was rubbing my feet, though.  ;o)

Before heading up to bed, B and I stepped outside for a bit to see if we could catch any of the meteor shower.  I’m pretty sure I saw two, but that was it.  It was a bit cloudy in spots so we didn’t really have full visibility anyway.

Sunday morning looked much the same as Saturday, but on Sunday Jacob and I went through his book bag and his folders for school to get everything organized for homework.  In first grade they really start to pile the homework on, so we have to make sure we stay on top of it.  Fortunately it’s looking like the teacher is going to give us the homework for the entire week every Friday, so that way if we know we’re going to have a really busy week, we can just try to do most of it in advance over the weekend.  So far homework is looking like this:

Monday – write each of his ten spelling words three times each (that’s 30 words, y’all!), math worksheet
Tuesday – write one sentence for each of the first five spelling words, math worksheet
Wednesday – write one sentence for each of the last five spelling words, math worksheet
Thursday – put spelling words in alphabetical order, study for spelling test, math worksheet

In addition to those things he will also have some kind of reading log plus AR reading and he will also sometimes have to complete math homework on a learning website that they use.  Whew.  I don’t think I remember having homework at all when I was in first grade…

Does that seem like a lot or am I just behind the times?

We had lunch at my MIL and step-FIL’s and after we ate the kiddos had a lot of good outdoor time.  It’s been so rainy this summer it seems like we haven’t spent much time outside, so it was nice to have some fresh air even though it was hot as Hades.

Jacob and my two nephews tossed the ball around for a long time and Jacob was eating up every second of hanging with the big boys!  Olivia and I also tossed a little ball around for a bit and she kept wanting to do (assisted) handstands every five minutes.  She can’t wait to go back to “nastics” tomorrow!

Sunday evening we spent some time with my family at my parents’ house.  I drew Ariel on Olivia's dry erase board per her request, we Facetimed with my brother, SIL, and nephew in Texas, and we also celebrated my uncle's girlfriend for her birthday Sunday evening and the kids were excited to have more cake!

My grandmother (who was in the hospital this time last week) was able to join us again and I was so glad because we missed her dearly these last two weeks.

She had her pacemaker put in this past Monday and everything went very well, so thank you for all of your prayers and well wishes.  We are so thankful for every one of them and we are so glad to have our Mama Cass back to being healthy and independent once again.  Well… not totally independent… she has to have assistance for about 12 weeks until everything heals from her surgery, but we’re hoping she’ll be back to her normal self very quickly.  She’s 88 and she still mows her own lawn for Pete’s sake!!  I’ve always said it and I’ll say it again… I want to be just like HER when I grow up!

On another note, my other grandmother was just admitted to the hospital with pancreatitis yesterday afternoon (we don’t have many more details yet), and on top of that my parents’ sweet dog, Lily, just had another stroke, so if you could please keep our family in your prayers that would be great.  2017 surely hasn’t been my favorite year and I have to say that I’m not going to be sad to see it go!

  1. EEK! So excited that football is starting back up!
My kids had more homework in the younger grades than in the older ones. Ella is in 4th and doesn't have any homework this year. She only had one worksheet last year! But I remember them having lots in 1st and 2nd!
Way to go on the Ariel!
Happy Monday! Keeping your family in my prayers!

  2. It just hit me that Olivia reminds me of my little sister, Rachel, which is why I'm always finding her pictures funny! I love it! She looks just like Rachel when she was younger! Glad the first week of school is over with! Here's my opinion on HW: the elementary schools still give it every night but it's tapered off in the junior high for us (I hardly ever give it), but then high school is hw almost every night!

  11. Praying for your family friend. I like that J's homework load isn't too much a little something to do, but most of it could be done quickly. Not too unreasonable for 1st grade I guess.

Okay so Ozark IS very interesting, right? We are almost done and I find the portrayal of people around here to be a slightly offensive, lol. Nobody is like any of those characters and people in MO don't have that thick of an accent. Also fun fact. Where it may be based where I live, its actually filmed where you live.

  12. Prayers to your family, Lindsay. Hoping everyone gets healthy ASAP! As far as homework in the first grade goes - Wowza! I definitely remember learning my sight words in the first grade - sight words!!! I remember these little green cards with words on them and my teacher, Mr. Lewis, going over them with me. Ha! Henry doesn't start until next week, but if first grade is anything like kindergarten, then I'm sure his schedule will look a lot like Jacob's. My-oh-my, how things have changed! The demands of kindergarten and first grade are so different now-a-days! Cheers to a relaxing weekend and amazing and happy days ahead! Happy Monday, girl!

  23. How neat for Jacob’s school to host a back to school event complete with free ice cream! I’ve heard so many great things about Ozark, but haven’t started it yet. I am still trying to get through The Ranch and Grace and Frankie. I just have zero time to watch tv. That seems like a ton of homework! Mason had zero homework last year other than the nightly reading. I am nervous for what this year holds. Keeping your family in prayer.

  24. I am glad that you were able to squeeze I. Some down time this weekend. I will keep your family in my prayers. Luckily Guy just has to study for his spelling and read for 20 minutes a night. I am not a big homework advocate so that does seem like a lot! :)

  26. I can't remember the last time I indulged in a DQ Blizzard. I should fix that. My hubs and I need a good show to watch together. We typically watch movies in the winter but don't have a regular TV show. I love Olivia's patriotic dress!
