Our Weekend - Preparing for Hurricane Irma

I’m writing this post late Sunday afternoon, but by the time you’re reading this we will be hunkering down under the wrath that is Hurricane Irma.  We are expected to take a direct hit all day Monday and early into Tuesday which will include 80 mph winds and wind damage, torrential rains, possible flash flooding, and widespread power outages, so please keep us in your prayers today and tomorrow as we go through the worst of it.

Today also happens to be September 11, a day that everyone already associates with disaster, so the irony that this is happening today is definitely not lost on me.

Our weekend was pretty much all about Irma.

Friday at lunch I stopped by the grocery store to grab some essentials because I had heard that many places were already out of bread, water, and gas, but fortunately our closest Publix had what we needed even though they were almost out of water.

Friday evening we were all exhausted from a crazy week, so B picked up a pizza and we enjoyed it with a glass of wine out on the back porch for the first time since spring.  The weather was absolutely perfect, so we stayed outside until almost dark, and then B and I caught up on the latest hurricane updates before putting the kiddos to bed.

We also checked out all of the hilarious Hurricane Irma memes, videos, and Facebook groups that people have started.  A little comic relief is always good, right?

I even wore a shirt that was deemed appropriate for the current situation as well.  Haha.

After the kids were in bed, we finished the first season of Ozark, and then it was time for bed ourselves.

Saturday morning Jacob had his first soccer game ever, so we were up and at ‘em pretty early to get ready.  His team ended up beating the other team 5-3, and while Jacob didn’t score any of the goals, he did at least get a piece of the ball several times throughout the game.  Considering he’s not very aggressive when it comes to stuff like that, we thought he did pretty great!  And I think now that he’s played a real game he knows what it’s all about, and I have a feeling he’ll be a little more comfortable and aggressive next time.

We let him choose where to go for a celebratory lunch and he chose Zaxby’s, and then we headed home for some downtime before church.

Saturday evening we dressed up in our Saturday best (red and black for our DAWGS) and we headed off to church where Jacob got to carry the book through the church for children’s liturgy!  I was so, so proud of him.  It really is the little things that are just so special.

After church we swung by Cracker Barrel to pick up some veggies to go, and then it was home to watch our Dawgs play Notre Dame.  The last time we played them was 1981 when we won our last national title, so it’s been a loooong time since we’ve faced off against them.  The game was SUCH a nail biter, but we managed to beat them by one point in the fourth quarter.  Whew.  We even let the kids stay up a bit later so they could watch some more, but mostly because we wanted to wait until halftime to do bedtime so we didn’t miss any of the game.  Lol.

Sunday morning B and I parked the kids in front of a movie – Moana, of course – and he and I prepped the house for the hurricane.  He mowed the lawn – because, priorities, hahahaha – while I got all of our electronics charging and brought in everything from the front and back porches.

Sunday afternoon B realized that we could dig out our old Aaron Murray #11 jerseys and put them back to good use before the kids outgrow them!  Our second string QB, Jake Fromm (who is awesome) is filling in for our head QB while he is injured and he’s also #11.

After snapping loads of pictures of my little twins, we headed to my MIL and step-FIL’s for lunch, and B’s aunt and uncle were in town visiting.  They actually live in Florida, but they go to Minnesota for the summer, and they just so happened to be journeying back to Florida this weekend.  Since the hurricane is currently hitting Florida they decided to stay here to ride out the storm.

The weather was incredible Sunday afternoon – the temp maxed out at 70, there was a thick cloud covering, and there was a strong, steady wind all afternoon so it felt like fall rather than the end of summer.  We pretty much stayed outside all afternoon to soak up as much of the fresh air as we could since we’ll likely be cooped up indoors for the next couple of days.

Oh, and my MIL had decorated her house for fall, so that made me really happy.  :o)

Sunday evening we headed to my parents for possibly our last hot meal for the next couple of days (they are expecting widespread power outages here) and we enjoyed wine and good company as well.

The schools, the city government, USPS, and the city police department have all closed tomorrow, so most other companies did as well, which means that Brian and I are both thankfully off today.  We are all at home together, buckled down, and riding out the storm all day today and tomorrow morning, so please keep us in your prayers.

For those of you who read daily, I will have a post up tomorrow as it was already written and scheduled, but depending on how we fare in the hurricane, I may or may not be here Wednesday due to possible power outages.  I will be providing updates via Instagram Stories as long as the electronics hold out, so you guys can always follow along with me there.

To everyone in Irma’s path today and tomorrow and the following days, our prayers are with you.
