Things Jacob Says - Volume 3

At least once a year I try to dedicate a post to showcase all of the fun and crazy things that the kids say, and today it’s Jacob’s turn!

April 1, 2017

Brian – “Hey Jacob, today is April first.  Do you know what happened on April first?”

Jacob – “No, what?”

Brian – “I proposed to Mommy.”

Jacob – “What does proposed mean?”

Brian – “I asked Mommy if she would marry me.  On April 1, 2007 I asked Mommy if she would marry me and she said yes!”

Jacob – “Did you say please?”

Brian – “No, I don’t think I did.”

Jacob – “If you didn’t say please then why did she say yes?”

July 14, 2017

Olivia – “I want a grilled cheese that has cheese on it.”

Jacob – “All grilled cheeses have cheese in them.  That’s why their last name is cheese.”

August 4, 2017

Jacob after a trip to Walmart with Brian – “Do you know why it’s called Walmart?”

Brian – “Why?”

Jacob – “Because you need a wallet to buy stuff.  WAL-mart.”

Brian – “Oh really?  That’s a pretty good theory.”

Jacob – “Yep, that’s why God named it Walmart.”

August 28, 2017

Olivia looks up at the sun and says – “Look, there’s the sun!”

Jacob – “Did you know that Jesus is the sun?”

*Brian and I look at each other puzzled*

Then we realized that he means that Jesus is the SON, as in God’s son.

September 9, 2017

Olivia talking about gymnastics – “Well, I fell on my head two twices so I don’t like gymnastics.”

Jacob – “Well actually two twices would just be four, so…”

September 27, 2017

Me – “Jacob, what did you end up having for lunch today?”

Jacob – “A corndog, but I don’t like corndogs.”

Me – “Well, did you pull the bread off and just eat the hot dog?”

Jacob – “Wait, there’s a hot dog in there?!”

October 18, 2017

Jacob gives me a hug and then says – “Mommy, do you know why I didn’t squeeze you too hard?”

Me – “No, why, Buddy?”

Jacob – “Because I heard you have a back allergy.”  (Referring to my back pain.)

December 15, 2017

In the car on the way home…

Jacob – “Mommy, I know how to spell liquor.”

*Me, trying to figure out how he knows the word liquor*

Me – “How do you spell… liquor, buddy?”

Jacob – “L-I-Q-U-O-R”

*Me, baffled, trying to figure out how he knows how to spell liquor, and why he even knows the word in the first place*

Me – “Why do you know the word liquor, Bud?”

Jacob – “Because it’s right on that sign over there!”

*ME, RELIEVED*

February 6, 2018

Jacob after putting on chap stick – “I don’t have lipstick, I have life stick.  Because when it touches your lips it changes your life.”

And that’s a wrap!

Things Jacob Says - Volume 2

Life with littles…

They really come up with some humdingers.  Just when I think they can’t get any funnier, they get a little bit older and they prove me wrong.  And in case you’re wondering, five is a particularly hilarious age.  This kid comes up with some doozies without even batting an eye.

Day in and day out he never ceases to crack us up.  I only wish that I had been better about recording these conversations.  Here are a few that I actually took the time to write down so I wouldn’t forget, but this is just a drop in the bucket, friends.  A drop in the bucket…

December 21, 2016

(Before you read this one, I should mention that we have explained to Jacob that “hate” is a very strong word and that most of the time it’s not necessary to use… but apparently it’s very necessary to use when referring to certain flavors of lollipops…)

Jacob on butterscotch Dum Dums:

“I know I’m not supposed to say this, but I HATE this lollipop!”

December 24, 2016

Jacob on watching the movie Home Alone:

<Looks at me in horror, his eyes as wide as saucers>

“He’s jumping on the bed and eating popco-wen (popcorn)… that’s how you CHOKE!”

(He was dead serious and legit concerned for Kevin’s safety.)

January 6, 2017

Me – “I haven’t had a Reese’s peanut butter cup in years!”

Jacob – “I know that.”

Me – “How do you know that?”

Jacob – “Because I know everything in the whole world."

Well who am I to argue with that?

Five on Friday - Some Thoughts about Daddy

Since Father’s Day is this Sunday, I wanted to put together an extra special post today for my very favorite person in the whole world, my baby daddy.  I thought that it would be fun to record some thoughts on how we view our best guy from each of our perspectives.  I sat down with Jacob and Olivia (and Maui) and asked them some questions, and the responses were just as silly and off the wall as I had imagined they would be.

So in our own voices, this is what we think about Daddy…

O N E – My Comments

I love that you have been such a hands-on Daddy from the beginning.  I love how you love to pick up little gifts for the kids at random because you know that it’s something they will love.  I love how you always buy a special gift for each of them at Christmas instead of leaving the shopping entirely up to me.  I love that you’re willing to be a single daddy for an evening so I can go out with my girlfriends for dinner.  I love that you love to play with them and teach them new things and nurture them to help them grow and I love that you love them with every ounce of your being.  And even though your job can occasionally be a pain in the butt (i.e.: travelling), I love that you work so hard to make a good living so that we can live comfortably.  You are our own personal Superman and we’re so thankful for you every single day.

T W O – Maui’s Comments

Maui said that she loves Daddy and that she’s thankful for him because he always remembers to give her treats when she goes potty outside (Mommy sometimes forgets), and because he gets up from the couch 84 million times each evening to let her out every time she has to potty/sees a bug/wants to chase a bird.

T H R E E – Jacob’s Interview

What is Daddy’s favorite color?  “Red!”  (Excellent choice.)

What is Daddy’s favorite song?  “Ba Ba Black Sheep!”  (I’m sorry, what?)

What is Daddy’s favorite thing to eat for dinner?  “Umm… bread.”  (Lay off the carbs, B!)

What is Daddy’s favorite dessert?  “Key Lime Pie!!”  (Another excellent choice.)

What is Daddy’s favorite sport?  *With crazy excitement in his eyes*   “TENNIS!!!!”

What is Daddy afraid of?  “Big giant monsters!”  (Well, who wouldn’t be?!)

Who is Daddy’s favorite person?  “Donnie.”  (Huh?  We have one friend named Donnie and Jacob probably hasn’t seen him in ages.  I have no idea where this came from.  And what about Mommy?!)

What do you love about Daddy the most?  “His friends.”  (Again, huh??)

What is your favorite thing to play with Daddy?  “My Hot Wheels Garage and my Millennium Falcon.”  (Accurate.)

What makes Daddy laugh?  *Flaps hands, crosses eyes, and sticks tongue out* “Da, da-da, da-da.”

Alrighty then.

F O U R – Olivia’s Interview

What is Daddy’s favorite color?  “Ummmm…GWEEN!”  (Wow, she actually said a color… didn’t see that coming.)

What is Daddy’s favorite song?  “Ummmm… BOOTY!”  (Oh, here we go.)

What is Daddy’s favorite thing to eat for dinner?  “BOOTY!!!!”  (Yep, I thought that’s where this was going.)

**At this point we take a 10 minute break because I know if we don’t, every answer from here on out will be… you guessed it… booty.**

What is Daddy’s favorite dessert?  “Ummmm… cinnamon woll!”

What is Daddy’s favorite sport?  *Crickets*

What is Daddy afraid of?  “Ummmm… poopie!”  *Jacob dies laughing, falls back on the couch, and shouts NOOOO!*

Who is Daddy’s favorite person?  “BOOTY!!!!  Anna!  Mommy!  Poopie!!!!”  (Here we go again.)

*Takes another 10 minute break*

What do you love about Daddy the most?  “Ummmm… fishies… da fishies in da o-shun.”  (O-kay.)

What is your favorite thing to play with Daddy?  “Ummmm… fishies!”  *I rephrase the question and ask her if she likes to play with any toys when she plays with Daddy*  “Ummmm… yeah, Hot Wheels!”  (Accurate.)

What makes Daddy laugh?  “Ummmm… fishies!”

Well I guess that’s better than booty.

Five On Friday – Things to Remember About Right Now

Happy Friday!  This weekend is going to be especially great because Brian and I have a date night planned for Saturday.  We’ll be heading to a benefit ball that we attend every year, so it should be a fun night of dressing up, good food, delicious drinks, and good times with good people.  The food is always amazing, so I’m really looking forward to it.

With Olivia’s second birthday rapidly approaching, I’m reminded of what a thief time really is, stealing seconds, minutes, and hours away from us without notice.  And before you know it, your newborn baby girl whose feet barely dangled past your chest when you held her is turning into a toddler who has to curl her legs up when she lays across your lap.  And that tiny button nose on your baby boy’s face is replaced with one more refined, more prominent, and you realize sadly that he’s no longer a baby or even a toddler… he’s a boy.

It happens to the best of us, and the older we get, the faster time goes.  Before we know it, our sweet babies will be grown and gone.

There are so many little things that we experience in our day to day routine that we don’t give much thought to in the present, but eventually those things will be gone, and one day we will miss them.

That is, if we even remember them in the first place.

Today I wanted to capture a few of those routine moments and bottle them up so I never forget.

O N E – Jacob’s Bedtime Routine

Brian helps Jacob get ready for bed while I put Olivia down each night, and then I meet up with them.  Before I come in, Jacob puts on his own PJs after his bath, and then he and Brian always read a couple of books followed by teeth brushing.  After he brushes his teeth, he goes back in his room, turns on his star projector, turns off his lamp, and then he wants to lay in Brian’s lap in the dark and chat until I come in.  If I come in before he’s done with that part of the routine, all hell breaks loose.  Lol.  So Brian has started leaving the door cracked open an inch and once it’s dark in there, I know to wait a minute or two and then it’s safe to enter.

Once I get in the room, I kneel down beside the bed and he comes and loves on me a little, then Brian puts Chap Stick on his lips, and then Jacob crawls into bed.  He never wants his blanket at first, and he likes for me to ask, “Do you want Mommy or Daddy to stay with you for a few minutes?”  And then he always says yes, and depending on what “pattern” he’s using, he decides whose turn it is to stay with him.  The pattern we are currently using is, “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, Mommy” so clearly we know who his favorite is right now.  ;o)

Then whoever stays with him scratches his back (UNDER HIS SHIRT!!) for a few minutes and then we ask him if he wants water or his blanket and he always says that he wants water first.  He sips the tiniest sip of water, and then we cover him with the blanket, pat him for another minute, kiss him goodnight, and make our exit.  That is, if he doesn’t say, “Don’t leave yet.”  If that’s the case (which it usually isn’t anymore – because growing up) then we stay for a couple more minutes.

T W O – Olivia’s Bedtime Routine

While Brian is assisting Jacob, Olivia sits in my lap in her rocking chair while we read a couple of books, and then before we turn her lamp off she has to pick up the giant picture frame of monthly pictures from her first year and she has to “feed” her paci to each picture, wipe it off, and then tell it goodnight – “Goodnight, Wee-ya” (Olivia).  She does this thirteen times.  It is a hoot.  And some nights, it is a bit exhausting.

After she tells all thirteen of herselves goodnight, we turn off the light and she says, “Pray-yah, pray-yah” (prayer) like she’s from Boston or something.  We say the bedtime prayer first (Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep), and then we talk to God about what we are thankful for and we pray for any special intentions that we have.  My sister-in-law, Cheryl, is pregnant right now so we’ve been praying for her and the baby a lot lately, so now after we are done saying the bedtime prayer Olivia always says, “See-rawl, See-rawl!” (Cheryl) to indicate that she’s ready to pray for Cheryl and the baby.  It is the sweetest.

After that I rock her and breathe in her yummy scent for a few minutes, and then I lay her down in her crib.  She sleeps with three lovies – Sheepie, Lambie, and Baby (we’re so original with the names) – and she likes for me to place Sheepie in her left arm, Lambie in her right arm, and Baby on her chest.  Then for some reason she lifts her legs up in the air until I say, “Put your legs down.”  Then she lifts them even higher, and I have to say, “Put your legs down” one more time.  Once I’ve said it for the second time, she gives me a big grin, slams her legs down, I put her blanket over her, and we blow kisses to each other before I leave the room.

T H R E E – The Kids’ Favorite Toy

The kids’ very favorite thing to do each day when they get home from school is to run in our front sitting room, and play with the Hot Wheels Garage that Jacob got for Christmas.  That is the best gift that either of them has ever received, hands down!  They play with that thing for hours at a time!  A lot of the time they fight, but a lot of the time they get along, and it’s really sweet.

Olivia always says, “Gwaaaajsh, minute?”  (Can I play with the garage for a minute?) and it’s quite possibly one of the funniest things ever.

F O U R – Drying Olivia’s Hair

Since it’s winter now and Olivia’s hair has gotten really long, we have started using the hair dryer to dry her hair after her bath so she doesn’t have to go to bed with a wet head.  Lately Jacob has been running in and wanting me to dry his hair too.  Olivia was terrified of it at first, but now she requests to have it done.  This is a relatively new thing that we’ve started doing, but I have a feeling it’s going to last for a while.

F I V E – Jacob’s New Game

Just about a week ago, Jacob started asking Olivia, “Do you wanna play accidents with me?”  The first time Brian and I heard it, we looked at each other in horror wondering what in the world he was talking about.  We asked him if some of the kids in school play that, but he told us that he made it up himself.

Apparently “Accidents” is where you stand up on the seat of Olivia’s ride along elephant and then you jump into the ball pit.  Lol.  We don’t let them do that, of course, but it’s hilarious every time we hear him ask her if she wants to play “accidents” with him.

Sometimes we’ll be going up the stairs before bath time and he’ll yell, “Yay!  Let’s go play accidents!”

Little things like these are the things that I know I’ll forget about one day if I don’t document them, and who would want to forget about the game of accidents?!  #Classic

Enjoy your weekend!

Things Jacob Says

Jacob is at the perfect age to keep us extremely entertained simply by opening his mouth.  Every day it’s something.  And last week was no exception.

Jacob – “We learned about letter H today at school.”

Me – “Oh yeah, what did you learn about the letter H?”

Jacob – “We learned about hot like when you love somebody.”

*Brian and I glance nervously at one another*

Me – <concerned> “Hot like when you love somebody?  What do you mean?”

Jacob – “No, not hot… HOT!”

Me – “Hot?”

Jacob – “Not hot… HOT!!”

Brian – “Hot?  Hawt?”

Jacob – <frustrated> “NOT HOT… HOT!!!!”

*Brian and I glance up at the ceiling and all around the room as if waiting for a tiny translator to pop out to save the day*

Me – “OHHHH… HEART?!”

Jacob – “YES!  HOT!”

*Brian and I – relieved that we don’t have to answer any birds and bees questions from a toddler*

The moral of the story:  We must teach this boy how to pronounce his Rs.
