The Best Halloween Books for Kids Part 2

Last year, I shared a batch of fun Halloween books for the littles, and I’ve seen so many other good ones that I thought I’d share them with you today.  We are huge fans of children’s books, and I truly believe that you’re never too old for them… we still read some of them together even though our kids are 10 and 7.  I mean, heck, I’m 39 and I still love them.  ;o)

While we typically check out most books from the library, I do purchase our favorites that we love to read year after year.  I’ve always loved books and I still have some of my favorites from my childhood, and I plan on keeping many of our kids’ favorites as well, so we can eventually pass them down to our grandchildren.  I truly believe you can never have too many books.

1 – The Worst Halloween Book in the Whole Entire World by Joey Acker

This book is part of a series – there are others for Christmas, Thanksgiving, and many other holidays/scenarios – and the whole bit is that it’s “the worst” book so the story is “the worst” and the illustrations are “the worst,” but it makes for a really cute book.  It has a simple storyline and simple illustrations that makes for a fun and easy (and clever) read.  It’s highly rated on Amazon with 4.6 / 5 stars.

2 – Bonaparte Falls Apart by Margery Cuyler

This book isn’t technically a Halloween book, but it’s about a skeleton and his other Halloween themed friends (a Frankenstein, a spider, and a vampire), so it’s Halloween-ish enough for me.  ;o)  The book is about a little skeleton named Bonaparte and he’s always falling apart.  The first day of school is coming, and he’s worried about what might happen if he can’t keep himself together at school.  Fortunately, he has great friends who work to help him find a solution before the big day.  This is a great book about friendship, helping others, and learning to find confidence in yourself, and it’s a favorite in our house.  It has 4.8 / 5 stars on Amazon.

3 – Bone Soup by Cambria Evans

This book is about a skeleton with a huge appetite who finds himself in search of a feast in a new town on Halloween.  While we haven’t read this one yet, the reviews are fantastic and it has 4.7 / 5 stars.

4 – Stumpkin by Lucy Ruth Cummins

This book is about a pumpkin who is waiting to be picked.  He is perfectly perfect except for one thing… he doesn’t have a stem!  And nobody wants a stemless pumpkin.  Will anyone take him home in time for Halloween?  The illustrations in this book are simple but beautiful, and the book is highly rated at 4.8 / 5 stars.

5 – The Scariest Book Ever by Bob Shea

This is a fun little story for kids of all ages, and again, the illustrations are great!  We added this one to our collection last year and it’s one of Olivia’s favorites.  It has 4.7 / 5 stars.

6 – The Witch’s Cat by Sonica Ellis

This book is about a black cat who has trouble making friends, and she ultimately learns just how important it is to be confident and be yourself.  I love a children’s book with a good message, and this one fits the bill.  It has 4.7 / 5 stars.

7 – Gilbert the Ghost by Guido Van Genechten

This book is about a ghost who was born different – he prefers to be friendly and polite instead of being scary like he’s supposed to.  This 4.8 / 5 stars bestseller has been impossible to find for the last couple of years, but Amazon finally has it in stock!

8 – Gustavo the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z. Drago

This #1 New York Times bestseller follows Gustavo, a shy ghost who has trouble making friends.  The illustrations are just beautiful. and the story has so much heart.  It’s surely to be beloved by everyone in the family.  It has 4.9 / 5 stars.

9 – The Scariest Book in the Whole Entire World by Joey Acker

This is another book in the “Entire World Books” series, and this time, the main character has to make it to the end of the scariest book in the entire world.  A simple story and simple illustrations make for an easy, but delightful read.  4.4 / 5 stars.

10 – The Good, the Bad, and the Spooky by Jory John

This book follows the Bad Seed on his journey to finding the perfect Halloween costume and is highly rated at 4.8 / 5 stars.  If you love the original Bad Seed book, you’ll love this one even more!

11 – The Little Ghost Who Lost Her Boo! by Elaine Bickell

This book follows a little ghost who sets out on a hunt to find her BOO that has gone missing.  With rhyming words and a sweet storyline, this one is a good read with a great message.  4.8 / 5 stars.

12 – The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt by Riel Nason

This book is about a little ghost who is different from everyone else – he’s a quilt while all of his friends and family are sheets!  He feels sad and left out until he has a unique experience that could only happen to him because he’s a quilt.  This story has beautiful illustrations and an even more beautiful message.  4.8 / 5 stars.
