Girl Chat - That Time When I Was Really Lucky

First off, let me start by saying that I’m about the unluckiest person that you could ever meet.  I never win contests, I never win anything from playing the lottery or gambling, and I never get picked for anything.  And whenever there’s a tiny chance for something bad to happen, it usually happens to me.  So when I started racking my brain to come up with something to write about for this post, I couldn’t think of anything.  I mean, I did once find a four-leaf clover when I was young, and I did recently win a giveaway on someone’s blog (probably the first thing I’ve ever won in my life), but those two small events don’t really make for interesting blog posts.

I was babbling about my lack of lucky events to Brian the other night and he started racking his brain as well.  We talked about how we’ve been to Vegas eight times and we’ve never won anything significant.  We talked about how we occasionally play the lottery and buy scratch off tickets and we’ve never won anything big.  We talked about this and that, and finally Brian said, “Oh!  You should tell them your David Copperfield story!”

And so, that’s the story I’m telling today.

Let me set the scene for you.  It’s 2006.  Brian and I are not yet married and we don’t have kids.  So what do we do when we’re young and carefree?  We travel.  A lot.  Every year we would go skiing, we would go to the beach, we would go somewhere we had never been before, and we would go to Vegas.  Yep, eight years in a row we went to Vegas, and friends, it is one of my very favorite places.

Our 2006 trip was our fourth time going, and we decided to get tickets to see David Copperfield at the MGM Grand.  Our seats were fabulous… we were in the second or third row (I don’t remember exactly).  Towards the end of the show, David announced that he needed a volunteer to assist him with his next trick.  To select the volunteer, he pulled out a gigantic jar of pickles, he picked one of them, and he threw it out in the audience directly at Brian and me.  Brian caught it, but David asked him to hand it to me, and then he told me to come to the stage.  EEK.

Now, if something like that happened to me now, I would probably pee my pants and faint.  Back then, however, I was thrilled.

A stage hand came down to assist me since I was wearing sky high heels and I made my way up to the stage.  The stage lights were so bright that I couldn’t really see very well out in the audience, and I was thankful for that, because I’m sure that if I had seen the hundreds of people out there, I would have been a nervous wreck.

David then announced that he was going to make me have his baby on stage.  Say whaaat?

I honestly don’t even remember many details about the magic trick itself as it went by in a blur and it was so long ago.  I think I had to hold up a sign with baby names on it at some point or something like that??  I honestly don’t remember any of the details which stinks!  Unfortunately it was 2006 so camera phones weren’t prevalent back then, and theaters like this were also really strict about not allowing flash photography, so there are zero pictures of me on the stage.  The only pictures we have from the show are the ones that the show photographer came around and took before the show started.

After the magic trick was over, David stuck his face out and pointed to his cheek signaling for me to kiss it, so I did, and then I was escorted back to my seat by the stage hand.  When I sat back down, the stage hand told me that I was invited to a meet and greet right after the show, but that I had to come alone.

When the show was over, I wanted to see what the meet and greet was all about, so B stayed in his seat, and the stage hand took me back stage with two other girls who had also been selected to assist with other magic tricks.  We chatted with him for a few minutes, the show photographer took a picture of all of us with him (for their use, not ours) and he presented us each with an 8x10 signed head shot of himself.  And that was it!

I felt like the luckiest girl in the world that night to have assisted one of the most famous magicians in the world with one of his tricks!  Especially since he sought me out!  I did, however, think that it was really weird that Brian wasn’t allowed to go back with me to the meet and greet.

A year later (2007), I was listening to Bob and Sheri on the radio and they were discussing some new allegations against David Copperfield, so of course, my ears perked up.  They were asking for people to call in if they had ever met him, so I sent them a quick email because I did not want to be on the radio.  They emailed me right back and asked if they could call me, so reluctantly I told them they could.  I ended up talking to them on air for several minutes, and I told them all about my experience with him.  I think they were hoping that something creepy had happened since that was their topic, but I guess the only mildly creepy things that happened were a) that he asked me to kiss him on the cheek, and b) that they wouldn’t let Brian go back with me to meet him.

David Copperfield was eventually cleared of the allegations against him which made me feel better.  I am just thankful to know that I didn’t kiss a creeper on the cheek!  That would have made my story yet another unlucky one!

  10. Oh Vegas...we used to go every year too before kids. We were on our 6th year and haven't been back since I was pregnant with A. What a fun story! We saw the price is right in Vegas but neither of us were selected. That must have been pretty cool to be up on stage! Beautifully Candid

  12. Hahaha, this is so random! I mean it is hilarious and quite the memory to have. That is definitely weird that Brian couldn't come back. Thankfully nothing super weird happened, ha! I've never been to Vegas and always assumed I wouldn't like it, but it's nice to hear someone say such good things about it!
