Five on Friday - Hot Mess Five

As you can see I’ve been too lazy to come up with a theme for this week’s Five on Friday yet again, so I present to you my Hot Mess Five… much like my week has been.  :o)

O N E – Olivia is Going to be the Death of Me

Well, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, this girl is going to be the death of me.  Yesterday at 11 AM I was leaving work for my lunch break, so excited to finally get to run a few errands that are long overdue.  Just as I was exiting and almost to my destination (Hobby Lobby… naturally), I saw Olivia’s school phone number lighting up my phone.

NOOOO.

My first thought was that she had thrown up again and that we needed to go get her, but as soon as I answered I could tell this time it was something more serious.  The school director proceeded to tell me that Olivia had shoved a wood chip from the playground up her nose and that it was so far up there they could no longer see it.  (Totally believable – remember THE PEBBLE INCIDENT here?)  She went on to say that Olivia’s teacher did see the woodchip in there at one point and that Olivia was still telling them it was in there and that since Olivia is so bright and can speak so well that they really felt like she was giving them accurate information.

I immediately turned around, got back on the highway, and headed straight to the school while simultaneously speed dialing the pediatrician’s office.  Thankfully, they told us they could see her right away and that we did not need to take her to the ER.  All the praise hands for tiny miracles!

When I got to the school to pick her up, she was just sitting on the floor in the director’s office, playing with blocks, and she casually waved and said, “Hey Mommy!” like nothing was even going on.  That girl.

I went over the details from THE WOOD CHIP INCIDENT with the director one more time, I scooped Olivia up, and we hightailed it to the doctor’s office where we had to wait for over an hour.  Apparently it is not considered an emergency when there is a foreign object stuck in one’s nose if said object is not causing one distress.

Never mind that it’s causing the mom distress.  Sigh.

The doctor finally came in, searched all inside both of her nostrils, her throat, and her ears, and couldn’t see a darn thing.  She then brought in another doctor, and she couldn’t find anything either.  They did what they called a “saline bullet” (not as scary as it sounds) and they flushed her nose and throat out, had her blow her nose super hard several times, and they inspected all over again.  Nothing.

Sigh.

So we were told just to keep an eye on her and to watch for certain symptoms such as congestion, and a few other gross things that I won’t get into.  They did say that if we were super concerned they could refer us to an ENT to have them scope her nose just to make sure it hadn’t gotten trapped in her sinus cavity or in the curve between the nose and throat, but both doctors said that they didn’t feel that it was really necessary for us to do that.  They also told us that Olivia was in no danger at all since she was breathing clearly and acting totally normal.  They both agreed that the wood chip was most likely not even in there anymore, that it had either already fallen out or that it had gone all the way through her nasal cavity and into her throat and she had probably just swallowed it.  Ya know, no big deal.

We ultimately went with their advice and we just took her back to school and went on with our days.  She has been fine ever since, but I think I have fifteen grey hairs that have sprouted up just today.

T W O – Impromptu “Date Night”

Last Thursday evening, B and I had parent orientation for Kindergarten and kids are not allowed, so we dropped them off with my parents and headed to the school.  After sitting through the meeting, we decided to grab a quick bite to eat before picking up the kids.  We just stopped at Jersey Mike’s for subs, so it was super casual and not necessarily what we normally do for date nights, but it was nice to squeeze in some impromptu alone time.

T H R E E – Jacob’s First Day of School

Thank you for all of your sweet comments about Jacob starting Kindergarten this week!  He has had a stellar first week and he is loving every second!  His first day was a half day and there was no after school program that day, so I picked him up on my lunch break and took him to stay with my grandmother for the afternoon.  When I saw him, he came running to me to give me a big ol’ hug and when I asked him if he had a good day he said, “I had a GREAT day!!”  He was pretty much gushing all the way to my grandmother’s house – about how he loves his teacher and he loves his classroom and he loves Kindergarten, so I think it’s going to be a good year!

He has been a bit cranky every evening this week, but that’s to be expected since he’s so exhausted.  As his teacher told me, “Kindergarten is hard work.”

Not to be outdone, Olivia wanted to pose for some pictures as well... even though it was NOT her first day of school.

F O U R – Inexpensive Wall Art

PSA – TJ Maxx had this adorable clipboard with 12 frameable inspirational quotes for only $6.99!!!!  Each quote is on high quality cardstock, the designs are very modern – perfect for a home office – and the gold portions are actual metallic gold and rose gold foil… they’re not just painted to look like gold.  This was such a freaking steal!!  I mean, 12 different wall arts for only $6.99… I don’t even need the clipboard.

F I V E – Travel Gallery Wall

In case you missed it, I shared our travel gallery wall on Tuesday… it’s one of my favorite walls in our entire house!  Such a fun tradition that we will continue for our entire lives!

Well, I’m off today… Olivia’s school is closed for a teacher’s planning day to get ready for the new school year starting Monday, so I’m spending some one-on-one time with my girl!  That never happens and I am thrilled!!

As long as she doesn’t stick anything up her nose.

Happy weekend, friends!

I once rushed Henry to the ER with X-rays and everything because we thought he swallowed dice. Half of my gray hairs on my head are from that incident alone. These kids, I tell ya! LOL! Enjoy your time with sweet Olivia and have a great weekend, girlfriend!
