Happy Birthday to Me… 44 Things for Age 44

I share my birthday with Jesus’s Resurrection this year (April 5), so I thought I’d publish my birthday post a couple of days early!  Every year on my birthday I share random facts about myself, and this will be the tenth year I’ve done it!  I’ve shared a total of 385 facts prior to today’s post (although, my math could be slightly off… a math person I am not), so each year it gets harder and harder to think of what to say.  There may also be some duplicates as I don’t have time to read through the last nine years of birthday posts, so forgive me if you already know some of these.

Here we go!

/ I have Disney on the brain as I type this because I’m typing these blog posts well in advance because of our trip, and I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned it here in one of these posts, but Belle has always been my favorite Disney princess.  Beauty and the Beast came out when I was nine years old and I’ve loved her ever since.  Her dress is the best, her hair is beautiful, her voice is stunning, AND SHE LOVES BOOKS!  She’s also strong and scrappy and resilient, and she doesn’t let any man walk all over her. ;o)

/ I loathe packing for a trip, but I love unpacking after a trip.  That seems kind of backwards, but I am who I am.  Haha.

/ I used to love driving but now it just gives me anxiety, so Brian does all the driving if he’s with me.  I literally cannot remember the last time I drove, and he sat in the passenger seat.

/ Speaking of driving, it used to be one of my favorite things to do ever when I was in my late teens and early 20s.  Gah, I miss the nights of cruising around with friends in the middle of the night with the windows down and the music blasting.  Those were truly some of the best days of my life.

/ I prefer to drink out of small mugs.  I do not love a large mug because I have trouble figuring out how much water to pour over my teabag to get the flavor just right.  In a basic 11 oz. mug I know exactly how much water to pour, but in larger mugs I have no clue.  And larger mugs also make me feel like I’m not getting as much tea as I would in a smaller mug even though I know it’s all just perception.  Haha.

/ My very favorite setup in a restaurant is to sit in one of those semi-circular booths that faces the rest of the restaurant.  And I must be in the middle of the booth facing straight out.  I like to be facing the majority of any room (or the most ambient part) that I’m in.

/ The ambience is almost as important as the food in a restaurant.  I’d rather have mediocre food and gorgeous ambience than delicious food and crappy ambience.  I mean, ideally, I’d like to just have both, but if I had to choose, this would be my choice.  Haha.

/ I do not love standup comedy.  Most of the time it’s just not funny to me.  No, I will not elaborate further.

/ That said, Brian and I had the privilege of seeing Robin Williams do standup comedy in Las Vegas years ago before he passed away, and that, my friends, was a treat.  I miss him so much.

/ I voice text everything.  If you get a text message from me, chances are I used voice command.  Ain’t nobody got time to be typing out long messages (says the girl who types on her computer all day for this blog).

/ I once got on a plane to New York City with pepper spray and they didn’t catch it.  I had forgotten it was in my purse, so it was completely unintentional, and I was horrified when I realized it was in there when we tried to board a sunset concert cruise on the Hudson river a couple of days later.  They made me throw it out.  The kicker?  This was just four years after 9/11/2001, so security was extremely strict at the airports then.  I still have no clue how they didn’t see it in my bag.

/ I eat a banana every day and my favorite way to eat them is slightly underripe.  As you can imagine, that means that the majority of the time, I don’t get to eat them how I like them because they ripen so quickly.

/ I hate doing eye shadow, but I wear it every day.  I look dead without it and people literally always ask me if I’m unwell when I don’t wear it.  Right now, it’s trendy to have a natural eye with only gargantuan eyelashes, but I just cannot pull off that look.  Trust me, I’ve tried.

/ I hate pranks.  I can’t stand seeing anyone struggle, even in the name of a good practical joke.

/ I still have the same cell phone number that I’ve had since 2001.  It was my second cell phone number I ever had.  And the only reason I had to get a new one is because back then, phone carriers could not let you keep your same number if you switched from one to the other.  I switched from Cellular One (OMG do y’all even remember that one?!) to Voicestream (now T-Mobile) and they couldn’t transfer the phone number.  But the phone number that Voicestream gave me back in 2001 is still my current number.  I guess that means we’re celebrating our 25th anniversary this year.  Hehe.  <3

/ That said, I never delete old contacts either, so I still have phone numbers of every single person I’ve ever known since I was 19 in my current phone.  I even have old house phone numbers for my friends’ parents that don’t even exist anymore.  Hahahaha.

/ I love cilantro.  I obviously do not have that weird gene that makes it taste like soap.

/ I literally never eat in bed.  It’s just a wild concept to me.  I couldn’t even tell you the last time I did it because it was probably never.

/ I never work in bed either.  I don’t think I’ve ever done it once.  My laptop stays in my office 24/7, attached to my big monitor, my big keyboard, and my mouse like a normal millennial girl’s laptop should be.

/ Sometimes I think with a British accent.  I have no idea why.  Maybe it’s my ancestors coming through from the other side.  Haha.

/ I do not want any kind of salt in my cookies or my sweets.  Salty and savory are, indeed, a nice combo, but I don’t want them all in the same item.  Give me fries and a shake any day, but please do not give me chocolate chip cookies with a salty flavor and tell me that the salt brings out the flavor of the chocolate.  I do not want a salty cookie.  I also do not want salted caramel.  Regular caramel… yes, please!  Caramel with grains of sea salt in it?  Hard pass.

/ I watch over other peoples’ kids in public just in case nobody else is.  Does anybody else do this??  I’m always so worried about a kid getting hurt or kidnapped and it makes me soooo nervous when I see kids running around somewhere when a parent doesn’t appear to be watching them.  Once a mom, always a mom.

/ I still haven’t gotten my tattoo…

/ If I had to list 10 positive character traits about myself, they would be (in no particular order) – loyal, organized, empathetic, responsible, self-disciplined/motivated, punctual, genuine/sincere, creative, excellent communicator, good listener.

/ If I had to list 5 negative character traits about myself, they would be (in no particular order) – impatient, inflexible/not spontaneous, negative when things aren’t going my way, sarcastic (although some may view that as a positive... sarcasm is my favorite brand of humor!), cynical of others (sometimes).

/ When I sit down to eat, the first thing I do is salt the food.  I don’t even taste it first.  I just know that I’ll want more salt.

/ I pray in the shower every morning.

/ Or sometimes I will think about the dreams that I had the night before since I typically remember my dreams when I wake up.

/ Right before I get out of the shower, I crank up the temp of the water to high and scald myself before I get out because it prevents me from getting too cold while toweling off.  I loveeee super hot water!

/ I feel like I’ve aged physically more this past year than the last five years combined.  I went from having one or two grey hairs here and there to seeing several all the time.  And my neck has gotten ridiculous thanks to all the sun exposure that area has gotten my whole life.

/ But I do still feel 25 for the most part… aside from the neck and jaw/tension issues, of course.

/ Sometimes I still can’t believe that I’m an adult and that I’m allowed to buy a house and drive a car and be responsible for children.

/ I’m always a little irritable first thing in the morning and also again in the mid-to-late afternoon.  I pretty much always feel my best in the evening and at night.  I’m truly a night owl.

/ I cannot stand when water drips down my back after I get out of the shower.  I feel like I’m dying a slow death.

/ And same for water dripping down my wrists and arms when I wash my face at night.  I bought some handy little wrist towels, and they have been the best thing ever.

/ I am now on an eight-year streak in my Timehop app.  It’s the one app that I check every single day without fail.  And half the time the memories make me tear up.

/ I’m dying to write a novel and I’m sure I have one in me, but I think it would take years for me to write one and then I’d literally never write another one.

/ When I walk in the evenings, my favorite thing to do is listen to sad music and think about what my novel would be about.  I come up with all these good ideas and specific dialogue, but since I’m walking, I can’t write it all down, and then my juices stop flowing the second my feet stop hitting the pavement, and I completely forget all my great ideas.

/ I cannot have anything touching the front of my neck (turtlenecks, hoodies that are too tight, etc.) because my breathing will immediately get shallow and eventually, I will be gasping for air.  I do have a couple of loose turtlenecks that I can wear because they don’t touch the front of my neck, but other than very loose ones, I’ll probably never wear a turtleneck again.

/ I’m friends with almost every old friend, every old coworker, and every guy I’ve ever dated on social media… no bad blood here.

/ I casually have seven mirror balls laying around the house (excluding Olivia’s), and I want more.

/ I never skipped school, even though that was a pretty popular thing to do in the 90s.

/ I once wrote a short story about being trapped in a supermarket and it’s still, to this day, one of my favorite things I’ve ever written.  It was an assignment that was required of us in, maybe, sixth grade?  We had to choose somewhere to be trapped overnight and then elaborate, and it was just the cutest story ever.

/ Astrology and the zodiac and horoscopes aren’t really my thing, but I still find myself paying close attention every morning when they say mine on the radio.  I’m an Aries, a fire sign, and while some of the character traits of Aries do describe me, a lot of them couldn’t be further from my personality.

Happy birthday, fellow Aries!!

And happy Easter to all who celebrate!
