Happy 3rd Birthday, Olivia Cate!

My Sweet and Spunky Girl,

You are three today and your official “threenager” year is here.  Not that you really needed it to be official or anything… you’ve been acting like a threenager for most of your life anyway.

At three, you are a leader.  You are bossy, you are opinionated, and you are charismatic.

You hum, you sing, and you chatter nonstop.

You love princesses, dressing up, having your “show-nails (fingernails)” painted, putting on makeup, and all things girly, but you also love playing with the boys.  It’s not uncommon for you to run around the house decked out in your Belle dress and a crown while also brandishing one of Jacob’s Nerf guns or light sabers.

You love being naked!  You’d run around in just underwear all the time if we would let you.  As a matter of fact, every Saturday and Sunday when we’re at home, you pretty much do… when you’re not wearing a princess dress, of course.

You are completely obsessed with styling hair and you can actually put your own hair (as well as my hair) into a ponytail.  We have no idea how you learned to do that!  Your motor skills are refined well beyond your years.

You are finally starting to get interested in watching TV, but you still don’t usually sit through an entire movie.  Right now your favorite things to watch are Masha and the Bear, Sophia the First, and Lego Frozen.

You are obsessed with Band-Aids and you want to wrap one around your little pinky finger every.single.night before bed.  This has been going on for months now with no end in sight... and Band-Aids ain’t cheap!

You are wearing 4T shirts and 3T pants and you are still really tall for your age.  Most of your baby fat has just melted off these last few months, though, so your weight has stayed pretty much the same this last year.

You are fully potty-trained and you pretty much trained yourself.  All Daddy and I had to do was hand you some pretty Anna and Elsa underwear and you pretty much never looked back.  You don’t even sleep in a diaper anymore… undies all the way!

You are just the pickiest little eater that I’ve ever met and you pretty much just eat enough to keep you alive.  The one thing that I can always count on you to eat?  “Peanut and jelly.”  You love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  I think you would eat them at every meal if we would let you.

We moved you to your big girl bed a couple of months ago and it has been a complete and utter disaster.  You went from being the world’s best sleeper to the world’s worst sleeper literally overnight.  We just can’t seem to get you to stay in the thing.  Bedtime is a struggle pretty much every night.  And every single night since we have moved you to the big girl bed you have crept into our bed in the middle of the night.  Only once have you made it to the 5 o’clock hour in your own bed.

You are stubborn and you are bossy (did I mention that already?), and most of the time Daddy and I cannot sway you if you have your mind set on something.  It’s your way or the highway.  Which means that you spend a lot of time in timeout.  Or actually not, because it’s physically impossible to keep you there.  I always end up having to sit with you hold you down in my lap because you’re constantly trying to escape.  Apparently you don’t believe in the old phrase you do the crime, you do the time.

You are soooo clumsy.  You are constantly tripping, falling, walking into things, bumping your head, and hurting yourself.  Bless it.  I wish I could just wrap you up in bubble wrap.  But I’m not even sure if that would give me peace of mind, because I’m sure you’d still find a way to injure yourself.

You are terrified of any loud noise or any noise that is out of the ordinary – airplanes, helicopters, dogs barking, screeching tires… and do not get me started on thunder and fireworks!  You are completely panic-stricken now when you hear either.

You have a heart of gold, but you also have a mean streak.  You care deeply about other peoples’ feelings and you are always the first to check on someone if they are hurt, but… sometimes you were the one who hurt them in the first place.

You have a soft spot for Maui, and you are constantly talking sweetly to her and loving on her and carrying her around.  Bless her tiny heart, she is just so patient with you and she lets you haul her around the house whenever you want.  You would carry her everywhere with you if we would let you!

You give the very best hugs in the whole world.  Sometimes when you hug me, I think you’re going to squeeze the life out of me, and I love it so much.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, our lives would be completely and utterly boring without you, Olivia Cate!  God knew exactly what He was doing when He placed you in my arms three years ago… you are the perfect completion to our little family.

Happiest of birthdays to you, my dear!

I love you.

I love you.

I love you.

Love,

Five on Friday - Favorites

I’m off today to celebrate with my baby girl for her birthday, so today is going to be a good Friday indeed!

O N E – Night Out With the Girls

Wednesday was National Margarita Day so I headed out with five of my favorite ladies to our favorite Mexican place.  We used to have weekly margarita nights every Wednesday, but now that we all have kiddos we go more like once a month.  We hadn’t gone in more like two months this time, though, so it was long overdue.  We had the best time catching up and laughing and being slightly too rowdy.  We even had a secret admirer send a drink to the table for one of my friends… can’t say that’s happened lately!   We were pretty sure it was the super old guy at the table next to us (and by super old I mean like 65), so yeah… not that exciting, and probably just kinda creepy.  Haha.  My friend and co-worker Adrienne who also blogs (hi, Adrienne!) joined us for the first time, too, and she fit right in since she and I are always twinning at everything in life anyway!  If you haven’t already, stop by her blog and say hi!

And since we didn’t take a group pic, here are a few candids…

T W O – A New Organizer

My girl Heather (who also has a letter board) and I had been chatting back and forth recently about how on earth to store our plastic letters, and she sent me a picture of the perfect storage box that she found at Walmart.  So what did I do?  I went and got one, too!  Hers actually has more compartments than mine, though... my Walmart only had one like hers and the latch was broken.  Waaaahhhh!  But anyway, y’all know how much I love to organize… stuff like this just makes my Type A heart so happy!  No more dumping out a bag of letters and sifting through them for 20 minutes to find what I need.  Haha.

T H R E E – Nasal Spray

Y’all, this is such a weird one, but it had to make the list because I have been so flipping miserable this week and this was the only thing that was able to alleviate my misery.  I’ve had some sort of runny nose/sneezing/ears plugged/allergy thing for the last four weeks, but the past couple of days it has turned into some sort of severe allergy thing or a cold or something.  I don’t feel bad at all, but my nose has been completely stopped up for the last 48 hours and it has been sheer misery.  I tried pseudoephedrine (the hard core stuff that I think people use to make meth.  Lol.) and it didn’t help one little bit even though Brian swears by it.  Thank the Lord for nasal spray!  It has preserved my sanity these last few days.

F O U R – The Gym

I haven’t had a chance to go but once or twice these last couple of weeks, but boy, have I felt great on the days that I have gotten a work out in.  I’m hoping that things will finally slow down now that the birthdays and VDay are over, and hopefully I’ll be able to make it 2-3 times per week instead of 1-2.

F I V E – Cake!

I ordered Olivia’s cakes this week and I am dying to see how they turn out!  We are having a few small family celebrations so I ordered two different cakes.  One that will look similar to this:

And then one that is going to have this image put on the top of it.

She’s going to be so excited!

Well, we’re off to celebrate our girl!  Enjoy your day and happy weekend!

This is Three... Olivia's Birthday Interview

I started doing birthday interviews with Jacob when he was four, but I decided to go ahead and interview Olivia for her third birthday since she could pretty much talk to a wall.  What can I say?  This girl has the gift of gab!

This is three...

1.    What is your favorite toy?  “Anna!”  (She has so many different ones, there’s really no way to even know which one she’s referring to.)
2.    What is your favorite stuffed animal?  “Elsa!”  (Yes, this past year she has slowly made the switch from loving Elsa either equally to or maybe slightly more than Anna.)
3.    What is your favorite game?  “Ummmm, matching game!”  (AKA dumping the matching game cards out on the floor and then promptly walking away from them.)
4.    What is your favorite sport?  “Ummmm… Belle!”  After I tell her what a sport is, she says, “FOOTBALL!!!!”  (This is a true statement.  Just recently she asked me when we were going to be able to watch Georgia on the TV again.  A girl after my own heart!)
5.    What is your favorite book?  “Ummm, Anna and Elsa!!”
6.    What is your favorite TV show?  “Um, Anna and Elsa!”  (Hmm, I’m sensing a theme, here.)  Me: “Anna and Elsa isn’t a TV show, Olivia.”  Jacob chimes in: “Yes, it is!  What about Lego Frozen?”  (Touché, Jacob, touché.)
7.    What is your favorite movie?  “Marshmallow!”  (Soooo Frozen, then?!)
8.    What is your favorite song?  “Ummmm, Elsa’s song!”  Me: “Let it Go?”  Olivia: “MARY DID YOU KNOW!”
9.    What is your favorite band or singer?  “Um, Dacky.  Umm, Dacky.  Ummmm, Dacky.”  (So now we’re just going to get goofy, I suppose.)
10. What is your favorite holiday?  “Um, DACKY!”  Me: “Ok, enough of that…let’s be serious.”  Olivia: “Umm, Christmas!”
11. What is your favorite season?  “Dacky!”  Me: “Ok, I guess we need to take a break since you’re being too silly.”  I proceed to explain what a season is.  Olivia: “Ummmm… SUMMATIME!”  (Just like Will Smith.)
12. What is your favorite color?  “Um, pink!”  (No brainer.)
13. What is your favorite animal?  “Um, horsie!”
14. What is your favorite shirt?  “Um, Anna and Elsa!”  (Referring to her birthday shirt for her second birthday last year.)
15. What is your favorite fruit?  “Umm… grapes.”
16. What is your favorite vegetable?  “Umm… Play-doh!”  Me: “Play-Doh isn’t a vegetable.”  Olivia:  “Um, chalk?”  Me: “Also not a veggie.  Broccolli maybe?”  Olivia: “Um, yeah!”  (Obviously since it’s about the only one she actually eats.)
17. What is your favorite snack?  “Gummy bears!”  (We don’t let her have those for a snack… a potty reward, yes.  Snack?  No.)
18. What is your favorite treat?  “Gummy bears!”  (Acceptable.)
19. What is your favorite drink?  “Orange juice!”  Me: “Olivia, you don’t even drink orange juice.”  Olivia: “Milk!”
20. What is your favorite thing to eat for dinner?  “Um, sachi… pepper!  I like to eat chalk!”  Me: “So you don’t like to eat anything mommy cooks?”  Olivia: “Ummmm saushage.”  (Ok, that’ll do.)
21. What is your favorite restaurant?  “Chick-Fil-A!”  (Accurate.)
22. Who is your best friend?  “Um, Lucy!”  (Also accurate.)
23. What makes you feel happy?  “Um, Mommy!!!!”  (Awwww!)
24. What makes you feel sad?  “Um, Mommy!”  (What?!)
25. What are you afraid of?  “Um, thunder.”  (Unfortunately so, so accurate.)
26. What are you thankful for?  *Looks out the window*  “Um… trees!”  (What a great answer!  Even if you did just say the first thing that you saw after I asked the question.)
27. What are you really good at?  “Um, Anna and Elsa!”  *Jacob and Olivia both start laughing like crazy people.*  (Guess you need to be under three feet tall to get that joke.)
28. What is your best memory?  “Umm… Maui!”  (Our dog who’s still alive?  Odd.)
29. What do you want to be when you grow up?  “Ummmm, Olivia!”  (Best answer I’ve heard all interview!)
30. If you could have one wish, what would it be?  “Um, ears!”  Jacob chimes in: “Olivia, do you mean toy ears?”  Olivia: “Yeah.”  Jacob: “Oh, she means like Potato Head ears!”  (Aaaand Mr. Potato Head not even anywhere in sight.  Where do they come up with this stuff??)

What's Up Wednesday - February 2017

Happy National Margarita Day!  Go celebrate with your girlfriends!  I know I am!  ;o)

What We’re Eating This Week

Let’s see…

Monday – BBQ chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, honey glazed carrots
Wednesday – ‘Rita Night with the girls… Daddy can fend for himself and the kids
Thursday – Out because B and I have a date night planned!
Friday – Out again?  Or maybe grilled cheese or hot dogs at home…
Saturday – Out for Olivia’s birthday
Sunday – Good eats at Momma and Daddy’s

What I’m Reminiscing About

All things Baby Olivia.  She will be three on Saturday and my heart can’t really take it.  Three was the point at which Jacob stopped feeling like a baby to me, and it is really hard to believe that we no longer have a baby in our house.  She was such a sweet little sack of sugar and I can still remember the feel of her soft, silky baby skin and the sweet scent of her newborn breath.  Sigh.  I must stop longing for another baby!

What I’m Loving

All the spring fashion!  It’s looking like ruffles and cold shoulder tops are going to be all the rage for spring and I am 150% on board with that.  I love that my birthday is in the spring, because I can use my gift cards to refresh the spring wardrobe.  Some things on my radar… and they're all under $23!

 One / Two / Three

And can someone please find a copycat version of this dress for less?!  It is stunning, but that price tag is laughable.

What We’ve Been Up To

Lately we’ve been spending loads of time outside – dining down town, walks, playing on the playground, ice cream.  This weather has been positively crazy this winter.  I don’t think I can remember a hotter winter than this, and I’m sure that we’ve broken all the records.  The weather has been consistently warm for so long now that I keep thinking it’s April.  It’s so strange to know that it’s only February.

I wish our back porch was all clean and ready for al fresco dining because it’s definitely warm enough for that, but everything still needs to be hosed off and swept.  I just know the second I try to do that we’ll have some freak blizzard in March or something.

What I’m Dreading

Not too much to dread right about now!  Now that my least favorite two months of the year are almost gone, I’m coming out of my funk and starting to feel pretty good!

What I’m Working On

I’ve mostly been working on Valentine's Day prep, Brian's birthday prep, and Olivia’s birthday prep.  All three of these things fall within 11 days of each other, so that puts a ton of work on me all at once!  I would say that VDay was a success, B’s bday was a success, and I’m hoping that Olivia’s bday is a success this weekend as well!

What I’m Excited About

Girls’ Night Out tonight and date night to see Dierks Bentley tomorrow night!  I don’t get out much during the week, but when I do, I go out two nights in a row.  Haha.

What I’m Watching/Reading

Watching – The Bachelor (even though I’m so over this season… whoever’s idea it was to pick Nick for The Bachelor should be fired… as well as the person who cast Corrine), This is Us (I have a feeling we’re all going to be learning about Jack’s demise soon and my heart is just not ready for it), Big Bang Theory (are they ever going to let us see Bernadette and Howard’s baby?!), Scandal (there’s just not enough Fitz these days so I’m just not feeling it as much this season), Shark Tank (anybody want to help me invent something so we can get on there?!), Gilmore Girls (still rolling right along in season three), and we just finished The OA.  So.  Many.  Questions.

Reading – Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks.  As per the usual it’s still taking me forever to read one book.  I’m enjoying this one, though, and I hope to be able to list something different here in this post next month.

What I’m Listening To

Ed Sheeran’s new songs on repeat.  Ray LaMontagne.  The Lumineers.  And of course my old standards and jazz… that’s a given.

What I’m Wearing

Lots of skinny pants and flowy tops.  I have worn my puffer vests approximately zero times this winter.  This heat has been unreal.

What I’m Doing This Weekend

Celebrating my sweet, sweet baby girl!  B and I are taking the day off Friday to spend it with just her.  Then Saturday for her actual birthday we will probably go to breakfast as a family and then find something fun to do.  We will top the weekend off with a family celebration Saturday night with my FIL, another family celebration Sunday afternoon with my MIL, and then one with my family Sunday evening.  Lots on the agenda this weekend and tons of family time!  Love it!

What I’m Looking Forward To Next Month

We never made it to ATL this month, so I’m hoping to squeeze it in next month.  And also, B and I are seeing The Lumineers in concert in March!  I’m so excited I can hardly stand it!  We’ve seen them once before when they opened for DMB, but this will be our first time seeing them headline.

What Else Is New

I’m co-hosting a giveaway on Instagram today so check it out!  All of my momma friends will love this one!

Happy Wednesday!

Brian's Birthday Weekend

It was a three-day weekend for us, so I’m back at work today for a short week.  I’m also off Friday so it’s going to be a very short week.  Loving that!

This weekend was another great one!  Friday evening the weather was lovely again, so we ended up going downtown just like weekend.  We ate at one of our favorite local restaurants where I had a glass of wine and my favorite salad in the whole world, and then we took the kiddos for ice cream again.  I was hoping for frozen yogurt, but they had loved the ice cream place from last week so much that they wanted to go there again.

Saturday morning was spent working on Olivia’s birthday chalkboard… I can still hardly believe that she’s going to be three later this week.  Waaaahhhh.  Here’s a sneak peek… do you recognize that rose?

I also did a ton of laundry and started brainstorming on what to put on my new two tiered tray.  I always have so much fun creating different looks and decorating!  So far it’s still bare, but I have a few ideas up my sleeve…

Saturday afternoon Olivia was not wanting to nap so B ended up falling asleep on her floor.  You probably saw my post on Instagram.  But because she fell asleep so late, she only ended up getting in about an hour of a nap (usually she naps for at least two hours) so she was a little cranky at church.  Toward the end, B actually had to take her out for a couple of minutes because she was being so noisy.

After dinner we headed to one of our favorite local pizza places with my parents, and then B and I put the kids to bed and finished The OA.  Is anybody else watching that?!  The first season is over and I have SO many questions!!  I’m dying for season 2 already but I know we probably have a long way to go.

Sunday morning we took it nice and easy.  Sunday is pretty much the only morning of my week that doesn’t start off chaotic, and this past Sunday I even made myself a cup of green tea and I snuggled on the couch with Olivia while the kids watched cartoons.  That is so rare for me, you guys.  Most of the time on the weekend mornings I’m running around doing laundry, cleaning the house, picking up, working on projects… but this weekend I just decided to be still.  And you know what?  It was wonderful.

B’s mom didn’t cook because his step-dad is sick, so we decided to take the kids to Five Guys for lunch, and then we headed downtown to let the kids play on their favorite playground followed by a stroll on the river.  It was 75 degrees and sunny!  Perfectly gorgeous!

Sunday evening we had dinner with my family and my mom made Brian’s favorite meal – cheesy chicken, mashed potatoes, and she even baked him a Snickers cake.  Oh.  My.  Goodness.  It was so good but I felt like I wanted to die after I ate it.  It was so rich.  Haha.  We spent the rest of the evening Skyping with my brother, sis-in-law, and nephew, and wrangling two small kids who were almost literally bouncing off the walls from too much sugar.

Yesterday was B’s actual birthday and the kids and I were off for President’s Day, but he had to work.  Boo.  Poor guy!  We spent the morning taking it slow.  A quick load of laundry, some couch snuggling, and some playing, and then we met B downtown for an early birthday lunch at another one of our fave local pizza places… I told y’all he likes pizza!

The weather was absolutely perfect again, so we met a couple of my girlfriends and their kids at the playground and we stayed there for an hour and a half.  It has been a while since I’ve seen them and it was so great to get caught up.  I could have sat out there all day long!  And I could easily get used to this SoCal weather we’ve been having all winter…

B got home from work in the late afternoon and then we spent the rest of the evening celebrating him.  I cooked dinner and baked a cake and he opened his presents.  And yes, Brian is probably shaking his head at me for putting a picture of his underwear on the blog, but look at them!!!!  I mean, they are boxers with pizza and boxers with Moscow Mules (couldn't find them online) on them!  If those don’t say Brian, then I don’t know what does!  How I could I not get them and then share them with all of you?!

I hope that you all wonderful weekends like we did.  Today it’s back to the real world for me, but not for B and Jacob… Jacob is off for one more day so they are going to see Lego Batman while I go slave at the office and make money for the family.  ;o)

And now it's time for the Tuesday Talk Link Up!
